Focus Activity: On the left side of your notebook, number 1-25. Study for your test tomorrow!!!! Project due on Wednesday!- if you are working with someone from a different teacher- you need to decide which teacher to hand it into and let both teachers know.

Chapter 5 Trivia Directions Each slide has a question or series of questions. Answer them in your notebook next to the number of the question. We will go over the answers at the end. Slides will move automatically either after 30 seconds or after 1 minute depending on the color of the text. If the text is written in red- you will have 30 seconds to write an answer. If the text is written in blue- you will have 1 minute to write an answer. You may use any notes you have to find the answers, remember the more time you spend searching for the answer, the less time you have to write a response. Good Luck!

Question 1 What is an ion?

Question 2 What is a positive ion called? How does an atom become a positive ion?

Question 3 What is a negative ion called? How does an atom become a negative ion?

Question 4 Each family in the periodic table has a property in common- what would that property be?

Question 5 What is an ionic bond?

Question 6 What is an ion that is made up of more than one atom called?

Question 7 Name at least 3 characteristics of an ionic compound. What does the oxidation number represent?

Question 8 What does the 2 represent? H 2 0

Question 9 Fill in the blank Valence electrons are held ____________ by the atom.

Question 10 Use the criss cross method to write the chemical formula for the following compound. Don’t forget to check you answer. K +1 O -2

Question 11 What does the criss cross method show? Why do we do it?

Question 12 Do the backwards criss cross to find the oxidation numbers. Why is this important? Ba 3 P 2 Pb(NO 3 )

Question 13 Use the backwards criss cross method to find the oxidation numbers. Name the compound using the proper Roman Numeral. CuBr 2

Question 14 Write the formula for the following compounds: Iron (II) Oxide Copper (I) Bromide Lead (II) Sulfate Chromium (III) Chloride

Question 15 Name the following compounds. NaCl NaF MgS

Question 16 Ionic bonds are created between what type of elements?

Question 17 When naming an ionic compound, what do you have to do?

Question 18 How many valence electrons can an atom have? (Think of the Electron Dot Diagrams)

Question 19 What is a covalent bond?

Question 20 Covalent bonds are created between what type of elements?

Question 21 How would you show a single covalent bond using a Lewis Structure? Double? Triple?

Question 22 Explain the difference between polar and nonpolar covalent bonds.

Question 23 What do the prefixes represent when naming a covalent compound?

Question 24 Name the following covalent compounds: CCl 4 P 2 O 5 OF 2

Question 25 Draw a Lewis Structure Diagram for the following elements Carbon Aluminum Fluorine

Answers 1 an atom or group of atoms with an electrical charge 2 Cation- it loses electrons 3 Anion- it gains electrons 4 the same number of valence electrons/same oxidation numbers 5 a chemical bond created by 2 ions- held together by opposite charges 6 Polyatomic Ion 7 Crysalline solid, high melting/boiling points, when dissolves in water- conducts electricity. 8# of atoms 9 Loosely 10K 2 0 11It shows how many of each element is necessary to neutralize the charges 12Ba +2 P -3, Pb +1 NO 3 -1 It’s important to find the oxidations numbers 13 Cu +2 Br -1 Copper (II) Bromide

Answers 14 FeO CuBr PbSO 3 CrCl 3 15 Sodium Chloride Sodium Fluoride Magnesium Sulfide 16 Metal and Non Metal 17 Put the metal first change the ending on the nonmetal to-ide 188 19A bond between 2 non metals that SHARE electrons 20Nonmetals 21Single- 1 line Double = 2 lines Triple = 3 lines connecting the elements 22Polar- electrons are not shared equally – shows ions Nonpolar- electrons are shared equally- neutrally charged 23Number of atoms of the particular element in the compound 24Carbon tetrachloride, diphosphourus pentoxide, oxygen difluoride 25 C Al Fl

If you had trouble with questions 1-18 you need to study ions/ionic bonds/ionic compounds/oxidation numbers/ naming/criss cross method/ and polyatomic ions more If you had trouble with 19-25 you need to study covalent bonds/ covalent compounds/ naming/ prefixes

You have the rest of the period to finish your lab from Friday If you have any questions about the test or the project, now would be the time to ask.
