1 “Those who are entrusted to speak and teach…need to do so with … power that will be both heard and felt, lifting and edifying our people.” M. Russell Ballad, General Conference, Ensign Novermber 2004 ‘Teaching a foreign Language takes dedication. The best way to have this dedication is through love, love of the topic and love of the students. Teaching a foreign language is not teaching formulas, it is teaching the students with a holistic approach of grammar and culture and communication. The learning of the same requires dedication also, on part of the student. Also, learning is a long process and so students have to one, be patient, and two, not expect to learn everything at the same time, such as regional variants. Also, for some students teaching too much extra detail will negatively affect their motivation.’ -David R. Belt ‘By reading through some of the archives of FL Teach I have learned that one of the greatest advantages of participating in professional communities is so that teachers can “collaborate” together, even if they can’t do it face to face, or due to geographical distance or due to budget restraints. As Carol said in April 2009 when talking about helping students prepare for the AP Spanish Exams, “Yes, team teaching would be ideal. But in this day of budget cuts, it may not be realistic. Collaboration, in fact, is sometimes problematic (thus the immense value of the e-collaboration of FLTeach.)” Plus, the teachers can collaborate about many diverse topics according to the time available to each person.’ -David R. Belt ” Be your own man. Regardless of the trends or prevailing philosophies of the department you're in, that AP class is going to be YOUR CLASS. You've got to be strong enough and have enough self- confidence to stand up to pressure. That means that if, for example, the Spanish Two teacher down the hall "is growing concerned" about how you're running your class…, you're going to have to summons the poise, dignity, and self- respect to ignore her and forge ahead with what you're doing and continue to teach the class as you see fit.” Troy Fullerton, April 2009 (FL TEACH) “I'm not sure how anyone got the idea that you could show a student an infinitive with a reflexive pronoun and then tell them to make it work in a sentence provided, and think that is anything other than an exercise in applying formulas. In a math or science class, such operations are at the heart of those fields, but a fl is learned by using the language, not by studying it.” Pbarrett, April 2009 (FL TEACH) ‘When a young teacher asked for advice for first year teachers of Spanish or ESL Diana Waters replied, “You can't do it all the first year! Keep a journal or log of sorts so you can remember what worked and what didn't.” Diana Waters, April 2009 (FL TEACH) DAVID R. BELT Brigham Young University 3 de Agosto de 2009Spanish 477 FL TEACH PROJECT Me and a young girl whom I helped tutor in English while I was in Spain. I learned to love the student as I helped her learn. “Progress, Power, Personalization, and Love”
