3 Beyond the Border Action Plan

NEXUS Objective: Increase recognition and use of the existing, bi-national NEXUS program to advance the risk-based screening approach in air and land border services to benefit government, industry and travellers. Benefits  Reduced border wait times and expedite the border clearance process for low-risk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States; and  Simplified validation and passage process will increase membership to advance the risk-based screening approach in air and land border services. 4

Entry/Exit (E/E) 5 Objective: The establishment of an entry and exit system at the Canada/US land border to exchange biographical information on the entry of travellers, and an exit program in the air mode.  A record of entry into one country will be considered as a record of an exit from the other. Benefits:  Address threats at the earliest possible point, thereby strengthening shared security between Canada and the US; and  Improve the free flow of legitimate goods and people across the border and enhance the safety movement of legitimate travellers.

Border Infrastructure Investment Plan Objective: Coordinate plans for physical infrastructure upgrades at key crossings and jointly plan investments and enhance client service at small and remote ports of entry along the Canada–US border. Benefits:  Relieve congestion and speed the movement of traffic across the border. 6

Small and Remote Ports of Entry Initiative 7 Objective: Test the viability and potential benefits of expanding remote traveller processing at select small and remote ports of entry as a way to maintain border integrity and access to needed border services while increasing efficiency. Benefits:  Facilitating low-risk travellers allows CBSA to focus its efforts on areas of higher or unknown risk.

Single Window Objective: The Single Window Initiative is a joint project between the CBSA and other government departments and agencies (OGDs) that seeks to eliminate paper-based reporting of commercial trade data while developing a common electronic interface or framework with the trade community. Benefits  A “single window” that allows the importer to submit their requirements once instead of sending it to various government departments and agencies. 8
