1 HBD HV Control and Monitoring System A Gain vs. HV study throughout Run-9 – PART 1 – Manuel Proissl HBD Meeting 06/16/2009

2 RESOURCES OF INFORMATION  The HBD HV Server possess a very stable and precisely timed HV data backup process, which clearly stands out of the crowd, as it stores the complete status of every 1471N module every 7 seconds (esp. for TripProtect) as well as HV Control internal activities by system request from the control core. The entire system has been extremely crash tested and is very reliable. Blaming this system for RANDOM fluctuation in module gain is the wrong approach to this issue!  All this HV information is publically available in our database: hvdb  In terms of gain, all runs that have successfully passed OnCal are stored in the Phenix database. With that information one can retrieve the gain via running our root analysis script. 3 THE BASELINE FOR FURTHER STUDIES  In order to have a look at the latest produced runs, one may login as phoncs to any VA machine and run the following program: $> hbd/gain/glookup Provide a runnumber that has passed OnCal Result for example for Run 289071 (last Sunday evening): HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 3 of 5 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 16 th, 2009 RUNNUMBER: 288066 BEGIN: 2009-06-08 03:50:17 END: 2009-06-08 04:48:05 EVENTS: 18437439 +++++++++++++++++++++++ Gain vs. HV for Run#288066 ++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Module | DV_mean | MV_mean | Gain | Status ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ES1 | 0 | 0 | 0.935784 | FAILED: ZERO ES2 | 3880 | 3880.36 | 6.79559 | SUCCESS ES3 | 3954 | 3954.56 | 6.09659 | SUCCESS ES4 | 3804 | 3804.35 | 5.79865 | SUCCESS ES5 | 3876 | 3876.6 | 7.31137 | SUCCESS EN1 | 4000 | 4001.21 | 3.35373 | SUCCESS EN2 | 3867 | 3868.09 | 3.87023 | SUCCESS EN3 | 3980 | 3980.55 | 5.86731 | SUCCESS EN4 | 3838 | 3839.1 | 3.2634 | SUCCESS EN5 | 3913 | 3913.63 | 7.29307 | SUCCESS WS1 | 4037 | 4036.56 | 5.16927 | SUCCESS WS2 | 3941 | 3940.86 | 5.38924 | SUCCESS WS3 | 3843 | 3844.31 | 5.72362 | SUCCESS WS4 | 3855 | 3856.55 | 5.60244 | SUCCESS WS5 | 3916 | 3916.59 | 4.39763 | SUCCESS WN1 | 3941 | 3941.03 | 5.73651 | SUCCESS WN2 | 3930 | 3930.58 | 5.71409 | SUCCESS WN3 | 3839 | 3839.44 | 5.53937 | SUCCESS WN4 | 3858 | 3858.26 | 5.52579 | SUCCESS WN5 | 3990 | 3990.72 | 5.20858 | SUCCESS -------------------------------------------------------------------------

4 THE BASELINE FOR FURTHER STUDIES  A very different program is currently running for the past 33 hours to analyze the entire data from Run-9 and automatically generates a new database that will provide the baseline for further studies; in particular with the purpose to determine if our idea of a gain correction curve based on P/T has to be “slightly” adjusted in order to guarantee more stable performance in Run-10. The completion of this database is expected to be today, 06/16 at 2:30pm. Access tools for the Web as well as command line will be provided shortly after…  Higher P/T: lower Gain --- Lower P/T: higher Gain In order to follow these P/T variation, we adjust the HV, which is in theory absolutely correct… However, as we’ve seen multiple times in Bob’s lab: Adjusting the HV results moreover (easily) in “over-adjusting” the Gain. On the other hand, gain can also change without any change in HV!
