2 Attendance and Tardies Students may enter the rooms at 7:15 am Anyone entering the classroom after 7:45 is considered tardy. Instructional day ends at 2:45. Please try to schedule appointments after school. Please email eleattendance@cms.k12.nc.us and copy your child’s teacher in the email if your child is absent.eleattendance@cms.k12.nc.us Students who attend school regularly and on time are more successful. As a team, we hope to maximize your child’s learning potential.

4 Communication ELE Agenda Progress Reports-Powerschool Communication/SOAR Hawk Folders – bi-weekly Newsletter/Email – bi-weekly Homework Please attend Literacy Night/Math night on October 20 th.

5 Homework Policy  At Least 20-30 Minutes of Reading.  Homework may be assigned from different teachers- literacy, math, science, social studies, and homeroom.  Check agenda daily for homework and important information. Help your child develop good homework habits.

6 Weekly Assessments  Common assessments  Literacy and Word Work  Math quizzes  S.S. and Science quizzes and tests are announced 2- 4 days in advance with a study guide or class notes.  Students are learning the grading scale.  Check your child’s agenda

7 Grading Scale  A = 90-100 Excellent  B = 80-89 Very Good  C = 70-79 Satisfactory  D = 60-69 Low Performance  F = Below 60 Unsatisfactory  Transition Into Third Grade: a “3” in second grade is equal to 80-100% on the grading scale for 3-5.  Grades are earned, not given.

8 CMS and State Assessments  MAPS Assessment (Measures of Academic Progress for Students) 3 times a year  Reading 3D (Measures Reading Growth throughout the year)  BOG only for reading— Wednesday – Sept. 9th  EOG for Reading and Math  CMS and State assessments are NOT reflected on your child’s report card.

14 Writing Focus Writer’s Workshop Planning, drafting, revising, editing, publishing  Sentence Structure, Parts of Speech, Grammar  Narrative Writing  Informational Writing (Biography Report)  Persuasive Writing  Friendly Letters  Summaries  Poetry  Cursive  *Students will be writing in all subject areas.

15 Flexible Grouping  Students change classes for Literacy/Social Studies and Math/Science.  Classes will not be formed until all beginning of year assessments are completed and analyzed. Currently, students are switching across the hall, but that could change.  Students are placed in a class that meets their needs at the time.  Classes differ by pace and learning style— curriculum is the same.

17 SOAR Behavior Plan  All third grade classrooms will follow this plan  Students are expected to follow the ELE SOAR Matrix. Failure to do so will result in a strike which will be recorded in the agenda.  Parents need to review and initial agendas each night.  Students will be awarded tickets for good choices and having agenda signed/completed correctly.

18 Birthday Celebrations  Please give teacher 3-5 days notice before sending in birthday treats.  Birthday treats can be purchased from the cafeteria. (These treats are nut-free.)  Send in store bought (not homemade) cookies, cupcakes, donuts, or brownies—must be quick to eat  Labels must be visible on snacks.  Severe allergies across grade level.  Meet us in the cafeteria or send in with your child.  We have a “Birthday Book” club through the media center.

19 Classroom Fees  This year we are asking for a one time fee to cover grade level expenses. Our total fee is $57.00 Money will be collected 9/8-9/11.  Field trip to Matthews Playhouse – $7.50  Field trip to Discovery Place - $13.50  EOG Workbooks (Literacy and Math)- $13.00  Motivation Math - $17.00  Class T-Shirt - $6.00
