II. Struggle for the Pacific Until mid-1942 the Japanese had a series of victories May, 1942 the Japanese gained control of the Philippines Prisoner were forced to walk 65-miles in what is called the “Bataan Death March”

II. Struggle for the Pacific cont. After the battles of Midway and the Coral Sea the U.S. take the offensive Victory at Guadalcanal marks the beginning of an "Island hopping” campaign. The goal to recapture islands held by the Japanese Gen. Douglas MacArthur led forces northward toward Japan.

III. Defeat for Japan By mid-1945 most of Japan’s army and navy had been defeated. The question: invasion or the Bomb? Bloody battle on Okinawa – showed the Japanese would fight to the death 1945 some Japanese pilots chose to be “kamikaze” Kamikaze=suicide mission=driving their planes into American war ships

After FDR’s death President Harry Truman took over the office of President a. He new the bomb would cause terrible destruction b. Consulted his advisors and decided to use the “Atomic Bomb” to save American lives.

(2) August of 1945 an American plane dropped the bomb on a Hiroshima, Japan instantly killed 70,000 people August 8 th, Soviet Union declared war on Japan August 9 th, U.S. drops the 2 nd bomb on Nagasaki 40,00 people killed instantly August 10 th Emperor Hirohito intervened and forced the Japanese gov. to surrender
