CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 3 French translation of the OAIS reference model  The final French version is now available It has been sent to CCSDS and should be sent to ISO in parallel v For CCSDS, it may be validated u As a French version guaranteed by CNES or, if necessary u By a French-speaking committee made up of representatives of French and Canadian organizations v For ISO, it will be validated by the BNAE (an AFNOR-accredited standardization bureau operating at national, European and international levels) CNES will ensure that the French version keeps up to date with the English one

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 4 French translation of the OAIS reference model  Key stages : March 2003: Initial agreement between CNES and the BnF to kick off the translation First translation of the glossary in cooperation with BnF Sharing out of the translation of different sections Cross-referenced reading of the French version of each section December 2004: First French version complete and ‘acceptable’. Version ready checked by 3 organizations: v Direction des Archives de France (France’s national records management institution) v Institut Géographique National (France’s national mapping and survey agency) v Centre Informatique national de l’enseignement supérieur (France’s national higher education computer centre)

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 5 French translation of the OAIS reference model  Key stages (ctd.): January 2005: second French version complete and ‘acceptable’ February 2005: CNES contract to improve the French terminology (which where still hard to understand) awarded to a French language and archive expert v Significant improvement of the glossary (25 terms changed) v Numerous suggestions as how to improve the text March 2005: changes in the glossary applied to the document, rereading Early April: document sent to CCSDS and ISO

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 6 French translation of the OAIS reference model  Translation of the annexes Annex A has not been translated Annex B has been translated and updated Annex C (UML tutorial) has been translated Annex D has been translated and updated Annex E (layered model) has been translated The “Nestogramme” (Annex F) has not been translated  An index was added at the end of the document

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 7 CNES standards (RNC)  CNES manages a set of standards applicable to its various activities  They may be: Existing standards published by ISO, CCSDS, ECSS (European Cooperation for Space Standardization) or CEN (European Committee for Standardization) Standards drafted specifically by CNES  This set of standards is divided up into 5 areas: Management, quality assurance, engineering, launch vehicle engineering and regulations Engineering is further divided into systems engineering, software engineering, electrical and electronic engineering…

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 8 CNES standards (RNC)  In late 2003, a new area known as ‘data engineering’ was created. It includes : At the highest level v An introductory document justifying its existence v The OAIS reference model On a technical level v A document assessing data formats geared to long-term preservation Documents currently being prepared v Rules applicable to data-producing projects v Rules applicable to entities in charge of long-term information preservation These standards will also include a set of CCSDS standards (EAST, DEDSL, PAIMAS…)

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 9 European standardization activity in the aerospace industry  Draft AECMA (the European association of aerospace industries ) Draft standard Long Term Archiving and Retrieval of digital technical products documentation such as 3D, CAD and PDM data within the aerospace industry PDM – Product data Management CAD – Computer Assisted Design  (in the framework of the international LOTAR activity)

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 10 LOTAR  Long Term Archival & Retrieval of Digital Product data

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 11 LOTAR Forum (Core Team Members and Represented Companies)

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 12 Ongoing work by the French PIN Group  This inter-organizational group focuses on the long-term preservation of digital information,  Its activity is regularly expanding  More than 15 organizations and ministries take part in its activities  Organization of a 4-day training course on long-term preservation and access to digital information

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 13 Ongoing work by the French PIN Group  Training course contents: Global context of the issue Storage: managing storage media Formats used to represent information The OAIS reference model Preservation metadata Strategy and organization of digital archiving Legal aspects Access to information

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 14 Ongoing work by the French PIN Group  In all, 30 hours of training and around 800 slides An animated tutorial of the OAIS model would be really useful. This could also be done by the Data Archive Ingest Working Group  8 speakers who together prepared a consistent course  45 participants Information specialists Archivists Librarians Computer specialists  Another training course is scheduled for late 2005 and 2 sessions in 2006 There is already a long waiting list  A 2 weeks “summer school” for 2006 ins also under consideration

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 15 Ongoing work by the French PIN Group  Action with respect to industrial firms From the organizational model to the identification of products  There are few representatives from industry or software editors in the definition of OAIS-defined products and services Yet needs are expanding and there is a real market in this area  In June, the PIN group plans on presenting storage service needs to different players in this field: IBM, Storage Tek, Hi-Stor… and to initiate dialogue with these firms

CCSDS Meeting ’Producer-Archive Interface, 31/03/ 2003 CNES 16 Developments at CNES: SITOOLS  SITOOLS is being developed within a research and technology framework to demonstrate that it is possible to develop a data management and access system for laboratories that is: simple generic fully portable (Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac) interoperable based on open source software  SITOOLS is based on a concept of services: interconnected by a virtual Web Services bus, offering a global service which includes v basic services (catalogue, user space, repository) v added-value services (AVS) accessed by one or more client applications. The system may run locally, on a single machine, or be distributed over several machines or even several laboratories.
