WHAT DOES SAT STAND FOR? Originally it was known as the “Scholastic Aptitude Test” It is currently known as the “Scholastic Assessment Test”

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE SAT? The SAT is a standardized paper-and-pencil test administered by the College Board that measures critical thinking skills. It tests your ability to analyze and solve problems in math, critical reading, and writing. It is also a requirement for most universities which can determine whether or not a student is admitted into that particular school (aside from academic transcript and activities)

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLASS, SAT PREP? To either improve or get a very good score on the SAT!!!!! PRACTICE!!!! Practice a variety of exercises that will be on the SAT Learn different strategies to help one do well on the exam

WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN IN THIS CLASS? The different parts of the SAT The point/ grade layout of the exam How students will be scored Strategies that will help students do better on the exam New vocabulary words (and vocabulary strategies) that are likely to be seen on the SAT Time management All these skills are learned by paying attention, applying what is being taught, and practicing!

Critical Reading - Reading comprehension - Sentence completion Writing - Identifying sentence errors (grammar) - Improving sentences - Improving paragraphs - Expository essay* Experimental # of quest. = 48 # of quest. = 19 # of quest. = 18 # of quest. = 25 # of quest. = 6 WHAT IS ON THE SAT? (LANGUAGE ARTS*)

The entire SAT takes 3 hours and 45 mins. to complete The Language Arts section takes 2 hours and 35 minutes: -Two 25 min. sections (sentence completion) -One 20 min. section (reading comprehension) -One 25 min. section (identifying sentence errors) -One 10 min. section (improving sentences) -One 25 min. expository essay -One 25 min. experimental section (unknown) HOW LONG IS THE SAT?

SCORING The highest possible score on the SAT is 2400 Three sections: Math, Reading, Writing 800 points each Good “average” national score= 1500-1600

SCORING…. Each question = 1 point One wrong question =.25 points Blank/ no answer to question = 0 points

The “College Board” is the group who constructs the SAT We will be learning strategies from the College board prep text We will be practicing exercises from both College Board and Princeton Review FREE practice tests are available on the collegeboard.com website SAT question of the day-: Collegeboard.com (math & language arts)

Class RULES* -When students are absent, they have two days for each day they are absent to make up the work (district policy). - Students are to check make-up bin for work when they are absent. Students are not excused from assignments when they are absent. - Homework board always has assignments and their due date. Students are recommended to write HW in planner. - It is expected that students are respectful to both their teachers and peers. Be mindful of others who may have different opinions and beliefs. As the saying goes, “Treat others how you would like to be treated!”

GRADING Math and Language Arts will be averaged together 50% + 50%= 100% Grades consist of: Minor assessments (12-20) - Vocab. Quizzes - Strategies quizzes - Practice assessments (content) - “Do Now” assessments Major Assessments (2-3) - Notebook check - Class strategies TEST - Vocab. TEST

E- BOARD Check the class’s “E-Board” for class assignments, projects, homework, notes, power points, important dates (calendar), etc… Go to: - CHS website - E-board Tab - Teacher E-board - Find teacher’s name - Click - Find tab for specific class- see different “notes” - *Class PASSWORD= colonia
