Harold Pratt – hpratt@comcast.com Francis Eberle - feberle@nsta.org How to Engage Science Educators in the Public Review of the Next Generation Science Standards

Purpose of Session Have a voice Learn how to conduct a review or discussion Providing feedback to Achieve To begin think what it will take to help others use these standards

Instruction Curricula Assessments Teacher development Framework and Standards NRC July 2011 Achieve, Inc. Public drafts April 2012 => Summer 2012 Final version projected Dec 2012

Integration of the Three Dimensions Core Ideas Practices Crosscutting Concepts The practices are the processes of building and using the core ideas to make sense of the natural and designed world, and the cross cutting concepts hold the discipline together.

NSTA role with the NGSS Part of a Partnership – T he National Academies of Science (the NRC), American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Science Teachers Association and Achieve Inc. Provided guidance and reviews directly to the National Research Council and Achieve Provided names of teachers for writers on the writing teams

Resources to Conduct a Review NSTA Guide for Conducting a Review Sample Agendas and Facilitator Guides Suggested Questions Checklist (Will be available at www.nsta.org/ngss)www.nsta.org/ngss

Organizing a Review of NGSS A Checklist Determine scope of group review and select full-day/half- day agenda Establish time and location (wifi access?) Invite participants Prepare participants --Be familiar with Framework and other standards --Send background reading/resources, agenda, questions Assign individuals to teams and assign teams to specific standards Facilitate meeting Collect group feedback and fill out Achieve survey or encourage members to provide individual feedback
