4 What’s Up This Year? You will continue to increase and refine your reading and communication skills. You will read and write frequently in a variety of forms. We will focus on developing critical-thinking, writing, and reading skills necessary for success in an upper level English class. We will also build vocabulary and learn elements of grammar, usage and style.

6 Required Texts Holt McDougal Literature – Grade 10 SpringBoard English Textual Power – Level 5 Additional Novels: Students may be asked to purchase additional novels throughout the school year. However, both students and parents will receive adequate advanced notice of any required books titles.

7 Supplies A one-inch, three-ring binder for use in English IV Loose-leaf notebook paper A composition (or spiral) notebook for English IV A pocket folder or other organizational tool for use in English IV Blue or black ink pens Highlighters PostIt Notes in a variety of colors and/or sizes

9 Grading Policy Summative Assessments (tests, projects, and major essays) 60% Formative Assessments (quizzes, classwork, homework, etc.) 40% Minimum of eight grades per six-weeks grading period. Two Summative Six Formative

10 Late Work Policy Students are allowed to turn in a minimum of one late formative assessment per six-weeks. This assignment will only be graded to the maximum percent of 70… ie 70=100. Additional late work is not required to be accepted.

11 Make Up Work Policy One day plus one additional day for each day missed.

12 Academic Integrity The English Language Arts Department at Colleyville Heritage High School expects that all work turned in is the student’s own work. This bans all forms of plagiarism and cheating including: copying; cutting and pasting; presenting collaborative work as independent work; fabricating data, information and sources; and failing to use proper citations. Violations and consequences will be followed in accordance to the Colleyville Heritage High School Student Handbook. P. 23-24

14 Tutorials Monday-Thursday 7:45-8:15 a.m., Wednesday 4:00-4:30 p.m., and by appointment. I will do my best to accommodate students’ needs and schedules. BE SURE YOU SIGN THE LOG COMING IN AND LEAVING

24 Classroom Procedures Announcements Pledge There is to be ZERO talking during announcements. Questions, conversations, and your twitter feed can wait. We will ALL stand, as a class, to say the Pledge of Allegiance. If you choose not to recite the Pledge you may simply stand respectfully.

25 Classroom Procedures Cell Phones Here’s the deal- you’re adults and as such, will be given the responsibility of managing your cell phone appropriately. HOWEVER, your cell phone is to: -Remain in the upper left corner of your desk screen down. - Only be used at the direction of the teacher. -Be used as a learning device and for academic purposes ONLY.
