NHD High Resolution Metadata

The fuss about metadata Specifically in NHD maintenance, metadata are the only way to keep track of why changes were made to the data, what data sources were used, etc. NHD metadata are feature-based—each NHD feature has an associated metadata record Multiple features will often share the same record Metadata are stored in two geodatabase tables, NHDMetadata and NHDSourceCitation Metadata records are associated with features through the NHDFeatureToMetadata table. This table keeps track of the DuuID (metadata record) and ComID (feature record) The Steward will review and approve metadata records

In the NHDGeoEditTools Task Assistant In the Select Metadata Session window, click Create SELECT METADATA SESSION

Process Description should be as detailed as possible (4000 character limit) (Create Metadata Session)

Process Date: MM/DD/YYYY (for example, 10/15/2006) (Create Metadata Session)

Contact Organization: U.S. Geological Survey (Create Metadata Session)

Address Type: “Mailing and Physical” (VERBATIM) (Create Metadata Session)

Address: U.S. Geological Survey, National Geospatial Technical Operations Center, P.O. Box 25046 (Create Metadata Session)

City:Denver

State or Province: Colorado (Create Metadata Session)

Postal Code: 80225-0046 (Create Metadata Session)

Contact Telephone: 1-888-275-8747 (Create Metadata Session)

Attribute Accuracy Report A description of the accuracy of the attribute information in the dataset, including the identification of verifying tests used, testing methodology, results obtained, etc (Create Metadata Session)

Logical Consistency Report Explanation and results of tests used to determine how “clean” the data are (Create Metadata Session)

Completeness Information about feature-inclusion/feature-omission criteria, and definitions used, to derive dataset (Create Metadata Session)

Horizontal Positional Accuracy A description of the accuracy of the horizontal coordinates and a description of the tests used to verify that accuracy (Create Metadata Session)

Vertical Positional Accuracy A A description of the accuracy of the vertical coordinates and a description of the tests used to verify that accuracy (Create Metadata Session)

Metadata Date MM/DD/YYYY Date the metadata were created or last updated (Create Metadata Session)

Metadata Standard Version Version of the metadata standard used to document the dataset ( for NHD, use “FGDC-STD-001-1998 ”). (Create Metadata Session)

Dataset Credit Recognition of those who contributed to the dataset (Your Organization Name will be placed in this field) Ex: U.S. Geological Survey, National Geospatial Technical Operations Center in cooperation with U.S. Forest Service (Create Metadata Session)

Create Source Citation Information about the events, parameters, and source data that was used to construct or update the NHD, and information about the responsible party

Title Name by which the source dataset is known (e.g., “aerial photography, flight x, contract y,” or “LIDAR data, contract z”) (Create Source Citation)

SourceCitationAbbreviation Alias for source citation as it was cited in the Process Description (e.g., “DRG” if Digital Raster Graphics were used as source material) (Create Source Citation)

Originator Name of an organization or individual that developed the source dataset (Create Source Citation)

PublicationDate Date the source dataset was published or made available for release (can also be “Unknown”, or “Unpublished material”) (Create Source Citation)

BeginningDate First year (or year and month, or year and month and day, or “Unknown”) of when the features in the source dataset were captured or depicted (if Range_of_Dates applies) (Create Source Citation)

EndingDate Last year (or year and month, or year and month and day, or “Unknown,” or “Present”) of when the features in the source dataset were captured or depicted (if Range_of_Dates applies) (Create Source Citation)

SourceScaleDenominator Denominator of the representative fraction on a map (e.g., “24000” for 1:24k-scale source data, “4800” for 1:4800- scale source data, etc) (Create Source Citation)

TypeofSourceMedia The medium of the source dataset Try to choose VERBATIM from: "paper" "stable-base material" "microfiche" "microfilm" "audiocassette" "chart" "filmstrip" "transparency" "videocassette" "videodisc" "videotape" "physical model" "computer program" "disc" "cartridge tape" "magnetic tape" "online" "CD-ROM" "electronic bulletin board" "electronic mail system" (free text as last resort) (Create Source Citation)

CalendarDate Year (or year and month, or year and month and day, or “Unknown”) of when the features in the source dataset were captured or depicted (if a Single Date applies) (Create Source Citation)

SourceCurrentnessReference The basis on which the source dates/times are determined (“ground condition” or “publication date” are popular choices) (Create Source Citation)

SourceContribution Brief statement identifying the source information that contributed to the dataset (everything in the source data, or just selected bits?) (Create Source Citation)

OK

Click OK to save and exit (Create Metadata Session)

Contact Instructions “Telephone Monday – Friday, 8AM - 4PM, MST” Note: This must be entered manually in NHDMetadata table (Edit NHDMetadata Table)

Contact Email Address “nhd@usgs.gov” Note: This must be entered manually in NHDMetadata table (Edit NHDMetadata Table) Editor: Save Edits
