1 I can write and perform a spoken word poem.

2 Spoken word poetry is a growing form of literature used to address social problems through the performance of rhythmic language. It incorporates both emotional appeals and logical reasoning to persuade the audience of its message. Definition

3 For your next major assignment, you will write your own spoken word poem about a social problem or injustice. Perhaps a time when someone misjudged you—either because of your physical appearance, your race or ethnicity, or some other superficial aspect such as where you live. This is NOT a political piece. Assignment

4 Your poem should be at least 15 lines and should consider the way the words sound (rhythm, alliteration, etc.)—remember that this is a spoken word poem; it is meant to be heard, not read. Assignment

5 While we want these poems to be passionate, honest, and personal, we do not want to be hurtful.
You may not include a personal attack on another individual or group; no shots at someone you don’t like. You may criticize a social problem or injustice without naming names. Appropriateness

6 Also, many spoken word poems out there today tend towards the vulgar and the profane.
As writers in a classroom setting, you must choose language that is sensitive to audience and place. If you have a word that may be considered inappropriate, profanity or vulgar, but is vital to the piece, you must review it with Ms. S. Language

7 A copy of this poem must be submitted via Turnitin
A copy of this poem must be submitted via Turnitin.com by the end of the day Friday, May 22nd. Be prepared to share your poem in class on Tuesday or Wednesday, May Due Date
