Are the Articles of Confederation enough to hold the Union Together?

The definition of confederation is A.The United States of America B.An alliance of independent states who keep sovereignty C.The Land Ordinance of 1785 D.Outline for Government

“The war debt still hung heavy; states found their credit failing and small hope of betterment. Seven states had resorted to paper money. True, the postwar depression was lifting. But prosperity remained a local matter; money printed in Pennsylvania must be kept within Pennsylvania’s own borders.” Which weakness of the Articles of the Confederation this quote refers to. 1.No Standing Army 2.No power to tax 3.No common currency 4.No executive branch

“I have been greatly abused, have been obliged to do more than my part in the war; been loaded with class rates, town rates, province rates, Continental rates and all rates... been pulled and hauled by sheriffs, constables and collectors, and had my cattle sold for less than they were worth....... The great men are going to get all we have and I think it is time for us to rise and put a stop to it, and have no more courts, nor sheriffs, nor collectors, nor lawyers....” The speaker of this speech is most likely a supporter of A.George Washington B.Daniel Shays C.Alexander Hamilton D.John Hancock

Shays Rebellion

The Great Depression After the war, each state began issuing its own paper money The more money in circulation the less a dollar bought – By 1780, the paper money was "not worth a Continental" Finances collapsed – Paper money was refused as worthless – Gold and silver were hoarded by people 1784-1789: worst depression the colonies had seen

Debtors in Trouble Farmers tried to use their crops to pay their debts, but it wasn’t enough If they failed to pay their bills they were thrown into jail until the bills were paid Farmers all over the colonies rioted

Daniel Shays Former Continental army captain Demanded more paper money, tax relief, relief for debtors and an end to imprisonment for debt During 1786 the “Shaysites” traveled around preventing the collection of debts

Rebellion January 1787: Shays and his mob of farmers went to Springfield armory to get more guns and ammunition The State militia met them there Shays and his men were driven off and captured in February 1787

Shays Rebellion reinforced the fears of national leaders about the dangers of ineffective state governments and of popular democracy out of control. Effect was that people demand a change in national government

There could be no stronger evidence of the want of energy in our governments than these disorders. - George Washington

In what way did Shays’ Rebellion of 1786 lead to the formation of the United States Constitution? 1.It demonstrated a need for a process for accepting territories into the union. 2.Disputes between states could not be resolved without a national judiciary. 3.It showed that farmers needed the right to vote in national elections. 4.The lack of a national army showed the need for a stronger national government.
