Outer Ear - part of the ear that collects sound waves Sound waves - vibrations or movements of air

Middle ear - part of ear in which sound waves push against eardrum causing it to vibrate. Inner ear - part of the ear that sends messages to the brain & helps a person keep his or her balance.

DECIBELS (dB) A unit used to measure the loudness of sounds. 40 to 60 decibels are comfortable. Above 70 decibels are annoying and can cause hearing loss.

Serious hearing loss can occur from sounds of 120 decibels. 140 decibels might cause pain as well as hearing loss.

Decibel levels of Common sounds Rocket launch 180 dB Jet engine at close range 150 dB Live Rock Concert 118 dB Power Lawn mower 86 dB City traffic 81 dB Normal conversation 58 dB Whisper 32 dB

Noise Levels by Daily Activity Source of Noise Sound level (dB) Firearms 140 to 170dB Amplified car sound systems 140dB Portable stereos (Ipod) 115dB Weed Eater 105dB
