Introduction to Web Research There are a lot of resources on the Web, but we have to find the ones we need

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 17 Web Directories n General topics to explore n Good for browsing topics n Maintained by people, many times experts or authorities n Examples –http://www.yahoo.com, Commercialhttp://www.yahoo.com User-submitted sites –http://infomine.ucr.edu, Academichttp://infomine.ucr.edu Academically reviewed and approved sites

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 18 Search Engines n Program finds and indexes sites n Keyword search, more specific n Good when searching for something specific n Examples –http://www.google.com/http://www.google.com/ –http://www.alltheweb.com (meta-search)http://www.alltheweb.com –http://www.askjeeves.com (Q&A format)http://www.askjeeves.com

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 19 Search Strategy Questions n What do you want to know? n What are the key concepts or topics? n What keywords define those concepts/topics? (include synonyms) n What is the relationship between the keywords? n How does the search tool you’re using require you to specify that relationship?

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 20 Useful URLs n Web Search Cheat Sheet –http://www.colosys.net/search/http://www.colosys.net/search/ n Find Spot –http://findspot.com/http://findspot.com/ n University of Michigan School of Information –http://www.ipl.org/http://www.ipl.org/ n University of Albany Library –http://library.albany.edu/internet/http://library.albany.edu/internet/ n UC-Berkeley Library –http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Fin dInfo.htmlhttp://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Fin dInfo.html

Search Exercise Find lesson plans related to a topic of interest to your program

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 22 Evaluating Web Resources n Points to consider –Purpose –Author, Publisher –Intended Audience –Perspective –Currency –Accuracy –Links n Evaluation Guides –http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/eval.htmlhttp://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/eval.html –http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/ Evaluate.htmlhttp://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/ Evaluate.html –http://www.library.cornell.edu/okuref/research/webeval.ht mlhttp://www.library.cornell.edu/okuref/research/webeval.ht ml

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 23 Deep Web n Web databases not accessible by search engines n Many fee-based n Also called “invisible Web” n A White Paper –http://www.brightplanet.com/deepcontent/tutorial s/DeepWeb/index.asp n Examples –University Library, e.g., http://www.library.uiuc.edu/ http://www.library.uiuc.edu/ –Virtual Library, e.g., http://www.vlibrary.org/http://www.vlibrary.org/

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 24 Plagiarism n What it is –Using ideas and expressions without citing the source. n Why it’s easier on the Web –Copy-and-paste –Buying papers online n How to spot it –http://www.plagiarism.org/http://www.plagiarism.org/ n How to prevent it –Inform students n More information: –http://www.lib.duke.edu/libguide/citing.htmhttp://www.lib.duke.edu/libguide/citing.htm

Building a Web Resource Using teams, let’s build resource web pages for your programs

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 28 Web Pages using Powerpoint n Create a directory/folder on your floppy disk and name it “aspira2002_name” n Open Powerpoint and create a presentation for your program on some topic related to Using the Internet as a Learning Tool n Include links to relevant web resources –use “Hyperlink” from the “Insert” menu n When complete, convert PPT to a web page –use “Save as Web Page” from the “File” menu n Be sure to save in your aspira2002_name directory/folder n Use “index” as the filename n Note that Powerpoint creates an “index” file and an “index_files” directory/folder

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 29 Web Pages using Word n Create a directory/folder on your floppy disk and name it “aspira2002_name” n Open Word and create one or more documents for your program on some topic related to Using the Internet as a Learning Tool n Include links between the document and links to relevant web resources –use “Hyperlink” from the “Insert” menu n When complete, convert documents to web pages –use “Save as Web Page” from the “File” menu n Be sure to save in your aspira2002_name directory/folder n Use “index” as the filename for your first page n Note that in some cases Word creates an “index” file and an “index_files” directory/folder

Getting Started A few tips to help you implement some of these ideas

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 31 Getting Started - Plan n Develop a technology integration plan –Contributes to program objectives –Promotes active learning for clients/students –Get computers into the hands of clients/students Getting Started - Plan

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 32 Getting Started - Personnel n Build your knowledge base –acquire the knowledge yourself or secure a resource person with the knowledge (could be a learner) “technical” technology skills “learning” technology skills

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 33 Getting Started - Partner n Leverage local resources (find partners) –Associated school may provide Space for labs Fully equipped labs Internet/e-mail accounts for clients/students Technical support for equipment Technology training for staff Matching funds for any grant money received

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 34 Getting Started - Hardware n Purchase quality equipment first –“fast” computers with “fast” access 256K RAM CD-RW 80 MB hard drive (the bigger the better) 17” monitor Dell Computers at http://www.dell.comhttp://www.dell.com –consider portables/handhelds for student loans

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 35 Getting Started - Programs n Microsoft Office suite standard –Word for Word Processing –Excel for Spreadsheets –Access for Database –Powerpoint for Presentations –Frontpage for Web Development (or Netscape Composer) –Internet Explorer for Web Browser (Netscape Navigator) –Outlook for E-mail (or Netscape Messenger) n Free stuff at http://www.cnet.comhttp://www.cnet.com

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 36 Getting Started - Access n Dial-up modem access - 28.8 slow; 56K not too bad but problematic for large graphics, video or sound files n Cable / DSL / T1 – Fast, but more expensive than dial-up; becoming common place n Wireless – Growing but not yet universal n LowerMyBills.com –http://www.lowermybills.comhttp://www.lowermybills.com

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 37 Getting Started - Internet Safety n What/who you allow your students to access n Who/what you allow to access your students n Acceptable Use Policies –http://www.monroe.lib.in.us/~lchampel/netadv3.htmlhttp://www.monroe.lib.in.us/~lchampel/netadv3.html

ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop 38 Wrap Up n Q&A n Evaluations
