1 Monday, November 5 th Agenda: –Bell work –Notes: Review types of Conflict –Conflict Activity in Groups Reminders: –Alternate Assignment on Wednesday & Thursday after school only. Will replace daily grade below a 70. Must sign up with me by tomorrow. –Chapter 1-6 Test on Friday. We will review on Thursday I love mark and emily ;)

3 Conflict Definition: –The struggle between opposing forces. Types of Conflict: –External Conflict –Internal Conflict

4 External Conflict Definition: –The character struggles against an outside force. Types: –Man vs. Man –Man vs. Society –Man vs. Nature

5 Man vs. Man Examples:  Jim and Mac disagreed about where they should take the dog they found.

6 Man vs. Society Example:

7 Man vs. Nature Examples: In the high winds, the crew was barely able to keep the ship from tilting sideways.. The girl struggled to walk through the hot, blowing sand.

8 Internal Conflict Definition: –The character struggles mentally to resolve an issue with their individual needs, desires or emotions. Types: – Man vs. Self

9 Man vs. Self Examples:  Sarah couldn't decide what to do that night. Should she study or should she go out?  Hector thought, "Why did I ever agree to be in this play? I'll never have the nerve to act in front of an audience." Or the black nail polish?! Do I want the red nail polish?!

10 Lord of the Flies Conflict

11 Read the following passage from Lord of the Flies. Is Jack experiencing internal or external conflict? “The silence continued, breathless and heavy and full of shame. Slowly the red drained from Jack’s cheeks, then came back with a painful rush. He licked his lips and turned his head at an angle, so that his gaze avoided the embarrassment of linking with another’s eye.” (Golding 127)

12 Identifying Conflict With your group you will find examples of conflict within Lord of the Flies. You should find 3 examples for each type of conflict listed on your chart. Each person in your group should write on their own chart. Make sure to include the text, page number and an explanation.
