Students need to have the opportunity to learn from other cultures or traditions It’s important to get to know your students and their family background.

Thoughts and ideas for planning a lesson on diversity:  Choose a theme such as another country or group of people and learn instruments they use, movements or dances, and connect with another subject.  Social studies is easy to integrate music with.  Be respectful and sensitive when discussing other cultures.  Make sure the content is age appropriate.  Activities:  Learn dances  Make instruments  Listen to music from that culture  Learn and sing music in English or other languages Resources: Music and Movement Textbook; internet; student’s background

LESSON EXAMPLE: “LUAU TIME” - During a discussion of WWII, the students could learn about Hawaiian music and dance. - Pg 160 contains the steps to the Hawaiian Hula - Students could listen to the style of music and learn the dance moves.
