Real-world & Practice Problems By Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers (all step-by-step explanations and answers on last two slides)

Real-world Problems You’re at the mall one day, and your friend wants to buy 5 packs of gum that are on sale for $1.33 each. He isn’t so bright at math, but hates extra change in his wallet. Exactly how much money does he need to give to the cashier to buy all 5 packs of gum without any extra change? Only $1.33 each!!!!

Practice Problems (answers on last slide and explanations on word document on wikispace page) 5 4/7 x 2 1/6 = 1/3 x 4/9 = 6/7 x 1/14 = 3 1/5 x 7 5/6 = 5/8 x 4/9 = 1 4/5 x 7/8 = 3/7 x 7 8/9 = 4/5 x 1/2 = Hmm…

Real-world Problems (explanation) First, you’ll need to understand what you are multiplying and how to change it into a regular problem to understand easier. So, in this case, you’re multiplying 1 33/100 by 5, since you’re multiplying a full dollar plus 33 cents (which is out of 100, since there are 100 cents in a dollar). Then, since he wants to buy 5, just multiply it instead of adding them all together and make life easier! That is why you multiply! ( fractions, mixed numbers, and regular numbers) Now, follow the steps of multiplying fractions and mixed numbers from the word document at the top of the wikispace page. But, instead of simplifying it at the end, since you’re dealing with dollars, just leave the denominator at the bottom 100 and change the mixed number into money form. If you did everything correctly, your answer should be… He would have to give the cashier $6.65 for all 5 packs of gum to not get any change back!

Practice Problems (answers) 5 4/7 x 2 1/6 = 12 1/14 1/3 x 4/9 = 4/27 6/7 x 1/14 = 3/49 3 1/5 x 7 5/6 = 25 1/15 5/8 x 4/9 = 5/18 1 4/5 x 7/8 = 1 23/40 3/7 x 7 8/9 = 3 8/21 4/5 x 1/2 = 2/5
