2. Today we will read The Declaration of Independence. 3. You will take notes in your spiral notebook.

2 Listen to The Declaration of Independence p. 111
As we read aloud, what are the most powerful words/phrases/sentences in The Declaration of Independence? Write these in your spiral notebook. These would be the statements that you remember after hearing or reading the text. Be ready to point these out and discuss them. Why are they so powerful? What literary device was used to stress importance/power?

3 THEME The theme is the main meaning of a selection. It can be directly stated or implied/inferred. Lines 8-17 The main subject of the passage is… Identifying people’s rights under government These words best summarize Jefferson’s opinion of the main subject (evidence): “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government…” Using my words, the theme of the Declaration of Independence (analysis): People have a right to a government that respects their rights, the right to overturn a government that does not, and the right to establish a new one.

4 TONE The tone is the writer’s attitude toward the subject they are writing/speaking about. Lines Try paraphrasing using neutral language: The King is sending in foreign troops to subdue the colonies. He has forced colonists taken into custody at sea to serve in his occupying army. What was Jefferson’s actual tone? Indignant, angry, outraged, livid What specific words contribute most to this tone? Desolation, tyranny, cruelty, perfidy, barbarous, executioners, brethren Words are powerful! Word choice create the tone.

5 PARALLELISM Parallelism is the use of similar grammatical structures to emphasize the relationship among ideas or show that they have equal weight or importance. Lines Independently and silently read lines Shoulder Share – Read these same lines aloud. Compare and Contrast the differences with reading these aloud to reading it silently. Cite evidence for parallelism: “we” followed by a present perfect tense verb; “We have warned them; We have reminded them; We have appealed to their native justice; we have conjured them.” All but the” second to the last follow the verb with the pronoun “them” The “we” statements are related because… They are ways the founders have tried to resolve their problems with Britain peacefully.

6 Syntax Syntax is the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language. Word choice and syntax contribute to the writer’s tone. Read the final paragraph. My general impression of Jefferson’s tone in lines are… Direct, reverent, confident, determined The words that help create the tone are… Solemnly, publish and declare, absolved, free and independent, full power, of right How does syntax help create tone? The arrangement of Jefferson’s words, phrases, and clauses in long sentences makes the language formal and creates a confident and determined tone that embodies the seriousness and firmness of the colonies decision to declare independence.

7 REPETITION Repetition is the repeating of words or phrases to reinforce meaning and to create rhythm. P. 113 “He has…” What effect does this have on the reader/listener? Emphasizes the king’s many offenses, creating a rhythm that hammers home the point the author is making.
