7 TH GRADE PRE-AP LITERATURE RACHEL JONES

CLASS OVERVIEW We will read, interpret, and analyze novels, short stories, poetry, mythology and a play (The Christmas Carol). In Literature, our main focus is reading analysis and comprehension along with identifying literary elements and figurative language. Students need to purchase the following books for class: - Lincoln’s Grave Robbers by Steve Sheinkin - Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings - The Giver by Lois Lowry - A Night to Remember by Walter Lord

MONTHLY NOVELS Students must read ONE book per month with three exceptions: 1. No book for August, December, or May The percent test score students earn on their AR book will be a test score that is recorded in the grade book for the month. REQUIRED A student may read as many books and take as many tests per month as he/she wishes given the book is an appropriate reading level. The highest test score will be recorded. Novels we are reading in class as novel studies do not count toward the monthly novel. Novels read in other classes (Adventures in Reading or Spanish) will also not count as their monthly novel. CAUTION

MONTHLY NOVELS Students will have the option of reading a non-AR book. A student may select a book and have me approve it for his/her book of the month. STUDENTS MUST SEE ME FOR APPROVAL AT LEAST ONE WEEK BEFORE THE DUE DATE. An assignment will be given in lieu of a test. However the score of the assignment will be the test score recorded in the grade book. See the syllabus for further explanation. CAUTION Monthly novel requirements/tests are due by the last Friday of each month (AR test or individual assignment).

ACCELERATED READER GOALS Point goals = 30 points each nine weeks. REQUIRED Bonus points can be earned. Each additional 10 points over the 30 point goal will be rewarded 5 bonus points up to 50 extra points. OPTIONAL AR Comprehension Score will be taken at the end of each 9 weeks and will average together all tests taken within the nine weeks for a test grade. REQUIRED Sign up for Home Connect! (on Library’s website)Home Connect!

AR LEVELS When your child brings home an AR book, they will be labeled with the reading level, the points possible and sometimes MG, MG+ or UG. MG means 4-6 grade, MG+ means 7-9 grade and UG means upper grades which means upper high school. If your child brings home a book labeled UG, you might look over it to see what is contained in the content of the book.

NOVEL DAY Every Friday is “Novel Day”. A novel is required on this day if students want to earn a 100% for the day. If a student does not have a novel then he/she will be given one by the teacher. Behavior can affect grade as well. Students will be allowed to go to the library every Friday to recheck books or checkout a new book. See Syllabus for further explanation.
