Background  Before he entered the National Film School in England, he spent a year in North Devon, England, documenting the way of life on the farms and in the villages.  He started in documentaries, shooting many in Africa as well as covering the Whitbread Round the World Yacht race titled, Around the World With Ridgeway.  Roger then went on to feature film cinematography, starting in England and then later shooting in the United States.

9. The Shawshank Redemption  First film to earn him an Academy Award and ASC Award nomination  It would be his first ASC Award  He became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers around the release of this film

O Brother, Where Art Thou?  Deakins earned his fourth Academy Award and ASC Award nominations with this film  First U.S. film to go through the Digital Intermediate to be entirely color corrected  Deakins used “the technology to drain every trace of green from the lush Mississippi landscape”.  The color correction took nearly two months to complete

11. Skyfall  Latest feature film  Third film with director Sam Mendes  His first film shot digitally  Skyfall earned him a third ASC Award and tenth Academy Award nomination  After shooting Skyfall, Deakins mentioned that he would continue shooting digitally as opposed to on film

12. Recent Events  Deakins is currently filming a movie titled Prisoners  In his free time, he continues his hobby of taking still photographs, sailing, and traveling  He also regularly shares his thoughts and advice on his website
