2. Mission Statement The mission of the Magneto Penitentiary is to advocate for a humane, just and restorative correctional system, and to promote a rational approach to criminal justice issues.

3. Characteristics of our Prison Medium Security For men over 19 years of age Imprison criminals within the Canadian legal system Located in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan Approximately 700 000 sq. ft. (960ft. x 730ft.) Contains about 800– 1000 inmates Electric barb-wire fence surrounding entire prison

4. Achieving the Purposes of Sentencing 1. Denunciation: allow time for convicts to realize what they have done 2. Rehabilitation: substance abuse programs, psychological counseling, 3. Deterrence: restriction on rights 4. Separation: kept away from society to prevent prisoners from doing harm to others

Prison Daily Schedule 6:00am- Wake-up and count 6:15am- Brush teeth, wash up, prepare for breakfast 6:45am- Breakfast is served 7:30am- Supervisors arrive to pick up community service work crews / Prison work crew begins labour 11:00am- All work crews return 11:15am- Count and prepare for lunch 11:30am- Lunch is served 12:30pm- All work crews resume labour 3:00pm- Change of guards

Prison Daily Schedule Cont’d 4:00pm- All work crews return 4:30pm - Count and prepare for programs (Education/ Rehabilitation Class) 6:30pm- Count and prepare for dinner 6:45pm- Dinner is served 7:45pm- Outside recreation, television, self-help groups, library 9:45pm- Issue clean clothes, shower and wash up 10:15pm- Return to cell, receive mail and medication 10:30pm- Cells locked and lights out

8. 11:00pm- Change of guards 2:00am- Count 5:00am- Count 5:30am- Change of guards

9. Why will our prison be different? Our main focus is education and workplace preparation Through our specialized programs, we will provide the inmates the opportunity to obtain a high school and/or college diploma As well, we assist our inmates by building their fundamental workplace skills so that it is easier for them to get a job when released With a proper education and workplace preparation, the inmates are better prepared for when they are released back into society In conclusion, the inmates will ultimately have a better grasp of what future career they will pursue outside of the prison therefore easing the transition from prison to society
