1 The Recruiting and Selection Process: Conducting a job requirements analysis Video 1

2 We will conduct a job requirements analysis for the purpose of creating an accurate job description and job specifications document.

3 Include all major tasks, leave out the non- relevant or trivial tasks Start with a verb Example: Instruct children in health and personal habits, such as eating, resting, and toilet habits Should be about 15 to 20 statements Task statements

4 Identify the specific tasks Write the tasks that you know to be part of the job Observe the job Ask for input from individuals who are in or have been in the position Ask for input from other administrators Use O*Net Job requirements analysis

5 Support children's emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts. Observe and monitor children's play activities. Keep records on individual children, including daily observations and information about activities, meals served, and medications administered. Dress children and change diapers. Maintain a safe play environment. Instruct children in health and personal habits, such as eating, resting, and toilet habits Communicate with children's parents or guardians about daily activities, behaviors, and related issues. Identify signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and bring them to parents' or guardians' attention. Assist in preparing food and serving meals and refreshments to children Sanitize toys and play equipment

Knowledge of child development Skills: Actively looking for ways to help people Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions Abilities: The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong The ability to come up with unusual or clever ideas about a given topic or situation, or to develop creative ways to solve a problem. Other Characteristics: Two years experience working with children in a formal setting

11 Job Context Work setting Teachers are assigned a classroom which are shared by co-teachers Significant amount of time is spent outside everyday, even in mildly inclement whether Work Attire Comfortable clothing. Collared shirts (oxford, polo or turtle neck) are required. Body positioning A lot of time is spent on the floor. Movement throughout the day. Environmental conditions The environmental setting is often very loud Teachers are expected to be outside in all weather with the exception of temperatures below 25 F or above 95 F or in the case of heavy rain. Job hazards Teachers are exposed to a variety of viruses, bacteria and childhood illnesses Lifting of children and equipment is required and without proper caution can lead to injury

14 Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Psychology — Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. Education and Training — Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects. English Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Monitoring — Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. Service Orientation — Actively looking for ways to help people. Speaking — Talking to others to convey information effectively. Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Social Perceptiveness — Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Coordination — Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions. Judgment and Decision Making — Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one. Reading Comprehension — Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Time Management — Managing one's own time and the time of others. Oral Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. Oral Comprehension — The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Problem Sensitivity — The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem. Speech Clarity — The ability to speak clearly so others can understand you. Speech Recognition — The ability to identify and understand the speech of another person. Written Comprehension — The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. Written Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Information Ordering — The ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations). Selective Attention — The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted. Education - High School diploma or equivalent Experience - Substantial experience working with children under the age of 13 Age - Must be at least 18 years of age Clearance - Must be cleared by the Statewide Central Register Training - Must be willing and able to complete a minimum of 30 hours of training a year.

15 Create a task statement list Identify the KSAOs that correspond with the tasks and the legal requirements for the job Identify the job context Create your job description Create your job specification document.

16 Your assignment: Conduct a job analysis to produce a job description and job specification document.
