Do-Now THE FORMULA FOR FINDING FARENHEIT IS F = (C X 9) + 32 5 1). What is F if C = 70? 2). What is C if F = 30? THE FORMULA FOR GAS MILEAGE IS: M = D/G 3). What is M if you go 270 miles on 9 gallons? 4). If you travel 600 miles and get 20 mpg, how many gallons do you use? COMPLETE THE DO NOW SILENTLY, INDEPENDENTLY, & IMMEDIATELY

Objective & EU OBJECTIVE: SWBAT simplify solve two-step equations with simplification, distribution, and variables on both sides of the equal sign. Essential Understanding: You know the math. They key to success is to work slowly, carefully, deliberately. Copy all items in red in your notes WHEN FINISHED SIT IN ACADEMIC POSTURE!
3
Order of Things 1). Distribute 2). Simplify 3). Inverse Operations Work Silently & Independently; silent hands for questions/to volunteer
4
Distribution When you have a variable or integer next to a parentheses, distribute and multiply the outside term to ALL the inside terms 1). First draw your arrows. Then avoid these three common mistakes: A). Distribute to all terms, not just one!!!! B). Watch the signs!!!!! Same signs positive! C). After you distribute, rewrite the entire equation! Don’t leave anything behind!!!! Work Silently & Independently; silent hands for questions/to volunteer
5
Simplifying with Variables on Both Sides 2x + 3x + 4x - X + 6 – 3 = 6x + 2x + 3 + 4 Rules to Remember: 1). FIRST, you combine terms on the same side of the equal sign 2). SECOND, for terms on the opposite sides, you use inverse operations. BIG DIFFERENCE! 3). Be Careful! Work Silently & Independently; silent hands for questions/to volunteer

Whiteboard Problem 1 Solve: X + 4(X - 9) = 2X + 3 Mathematicians are always careful!
7
Whiteboard Problem 2 Solve: 63 = 2(2X + 5) + 5 Mathematicians are always careful!
8
Whiteboard Problem 3 Solve: -2(-2X + 4) = 4 + 6 – 3 - X Mathematicians are always careful!
9
Whiteboard Problem 4 Solve: 4(X + 4) - 8 = X + 14 Mathematicians are always careful!
10
Whiteboard Problem 5 Choose one: 4(A - 2) = -3(A – 9) Or -2(3A – 6) + 4 = A + 7A + 10 Mathematicians are always careful!
11
Whiteboard Problem 6 Solve: 2(D - 5) + 4 = -2(D + 2) + 2 Mathematicians are always careful!
12
Whiteboard Problem 7 Solve: 4(-X + 2) = X + 5X - 2 - 10 Mathematicians are always careful!
