Orem City Roundabout Feasibility Study Brigham Young University and the City of Orem Determination of available land Roundabout parameters established for proposed roundabouts Location of utilities lines in conjunction with proposed roundabouts reviewed. Physical Parameters Recommendations Increase traffic flow along the 800 West corridor from 2000 North to 400 South. Project Goal Demands were established at each site and projected 20 years. Capacity of a single lane roundabout was calculated Demands vs. capacity analysis was conducted Synchro model performed to determine Level of Service (LOS) Traffic Operations Dr. Mitsuru Saito PhD Daniel Jean, EIT Faculty and Mentor Team Members Determine the feasibility of installing roundabouts at 2000 N, 1000 N and 400 S along 800 West. Objective Flowrates of 800 W 400 S Peak Volumes and Peak Hour Factor for 800 W 400 S Synchro Simulation Design of Existing Condition AutoCad Civil 3D Design at 800 W 400 S Christopher K. Haskell Zane Pulver John Jensen N Roundabouts proved feasible for each site. Construct single lane roundabouts for each of the three intersections. Construct small roundabout to decrease land purchase costs. Outer diameter of 90 ft. for each roundabout. Constructing triangle of 100 ft. maximum due to residential driveways Purchase small amounts of property for each site.

 Fifth largest city in Utah  Houses larges university in the state  Area encompasses 18.3 square miles  Population of 90,749 as of 2012 census  Density of 4,826 people/square mile  Classified as urbanized community (AASHTO)

 To reduce traffic delay  To improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists  To assist in traffic flow  To improve air quality by reducing unnecessary stops

 Three Sites for Study  800 West  2000 North  1000 North  400 South  Important Landmarks  UVU at 800 West University Parkway  MVHS at 800 West Center Street  Orem Elem. at 400 West 400 South  Timanogos Hospital at 800 West 800 North  Aspen Elem. at 1000 West 2000 North

 Site A  Four Way Stop  Two Lane One Way  Marked Crosswalks  Urban Collector Streets and Urban Local Streets

 Site B  Four Way Stop  Two Lane One Way  Urban Collector Streets and Urban Local Streets

 Site C  0.6 Miles from UVU  Two Way Stop  Two Lane One Way  Turning Lanes on 400 South  Crosswalks on 800 West  Urban Collector Streets

 Collect Traffic Data for Sites A, B, and C  Tuesday and Thursday  7:30 AM – 9:00 AM  11:30 AM – 1:00 PM  4:30 PM – 6:00 PM  Jamar Dashboards  Peak Hour Volume (PHV)  2000 North = 578  1000 North = 556  400 South = 953  Growth Factor 1%

 Synchro Simulation  Current LOS A  1% Growth Factor  1% Truck  Projected LOS A

 Demand vs. Capacity  Demands  Peak Volumes  Adjusted Volumes  Flow Rates  Capacity  Entry Capacity  Single Lane Roundabout  Comparison  Max Ratio of 0.27  Max Project Ratio of 0.41

 Current Parameters  GIS Parcel Data

 Roundabout Demands  Type of Roundabout  Single Lane  Circle Diameter  90 ft.  Apron Width  12 ft.  Circulating Width  18 ft.

 It is feasible to install single lane roundabouts at all locations studied  Utilities need minimal movement in order to build the roundabouts  Small parcels of land will need to be purchased to build the roundabouts

 Sponsors  Keith Larsen, PE  Taylor Forbush, PE  Faculty Advisor  Dr. Mitsuru Saito, PhD, PE, F.ASCE, F.ITE  Graduate Mentor  Daniel Jean, EIT
