1 Name: …………………………………………. Group: ……………. TASK 1 Read and highlight the key words The UK produces 228 million tonnes of waste each year, of which 35% was collected for recycling. This figure is still quite low compared to some of our neighbouring EU countries. There is still a great deal of waste which could be recycled that ends up in landfill sites which is harmful to the environment. Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Did you know that: 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials As designers it is our responsibility to design new products from either reused products, recycled materials or reduces the amount of energy required during manufacturer or their function. Key Terms TASK 2 Highlight the key words Eco-design is an approach to design of a product with special consideration for the environmental impacts of the product during its whole lifecycle Renewable is the ability for a product, a source of energy etc. to be reproduced within 50 years. i.e. a pine tree is a renewable source as it can be reproduced within 30-40yrs. Crude oil (which is what we make plastic from) is not renewable because crude oil is a fossil fuel which takes the earth millions of years to produce! Sustainability can be achieved by replanting forests as they are cut down, or by recycling and reusing materials. Up-cycle this a relatively new word which means taking old products and “doing them up” either into an up-dated new version or into a brand new product. Challenge 1 Complete the two tasks on this page. Then create an information sheet of your own creative style which encourages people to recycle. Explain why we should recycle and what may happen if we do not! You do not need to complete the next two pages. Challenge 2 Complete the two tasks on this page. Then follow the instructions on the next two pages carefully. The more detail you add to this design challenge the better your marks will be! Level 4 Unique final outcome Key terms used. Neat colour or shading added Challenge completed EFFORT /10 1= poor 10= Excellent Level 5 Unique and creative final outcome with detail and explanations. Key terms used and explained Clear drawings with various rendering techniques. Challenge completed nicely. Level 6+ Innovative outcome, with depth, detail and explanations. Key terms used well and thoroughly explained. Beautiful rendering techniques. Challenge completed well. Clear drawings with various rendering techniques. Challenge completed READ SUCCESS CRITERIA

2 Challenge 2 RESEARCH: Look at some existing products that use recycled materials, reuses materials or their design reduces the amount of materials used. You can use additional paper if you wish. Stick a photo down and analyse. An example has been done. Write detailed comments on: What you think of the design. Who would use it. What the design is made from. How the design helps the environment. Stick a copy of the product image here Made from a recyc led 1950/60’ s lugga ge bag and redes igned to make a cat bed The materia ls used to make the cushion were previou sly curtain s and the wadding inside made from natural fibres EXAMPLE This product can be closed and easily transported These product s would appeal to anyone who likes retro product s, pet lover and the environ mental conscio us This product is better for the environment than making a new cat bed as it makes use of products which normally would go into a landfill. It requires very little labour and machining to make this product and therefore reduces factory emissions The feet on this product are made from recycle d wood that has been sanded and glued into a new shape http://inhabitat.com/keep-your-kitty-cozy-in-these-upcycled-vintage-suitcase-beds/

3 Challenge 2 DESIGNING: Create a new product that makes use of recycled materials, reuses materials or reduces the use of materials/energy. Draw the product in detail and fully label and annotate your drawing. Use additional paper if you wish. Write detailed evaluative comments on: What you think of the design. Suggest who would use it and why. Label what the design is made from and why. Explain how the design helps the environment. You may wish to have a go making an example (prototype) of this product!
