Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 2/12 Presentation outline Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 3/12 Introduction (I) Technology evolution Smart Homes / Automated Homes (domotic devices) Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions Remote Experimentation (Remote Lab. Infrastructures)

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 4/12 Introduction (II) Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 5/12 Smart /automated homes Technology evolution Smart Homes / Automated Homes Several technological solutions are being developed during the last years (adoption of domotic devices / technology) People lifestyles 1.Comfort ; 2.Security; 3.Economy & environment; 4.Leisure & relax. Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 6/12 Domotic technology (I) Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions 1- Reliability; 2- Devices; 3- APIs/software; 4- Support; 5- Price

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 7/12 Domotic technology (II) Advantages: 1.it is a standard; 2.several companies developing devices; 3.free software available (Calimero API); 4.KNX association; Desavantage: 1. Price ! Gira touch panel (for controlling the entire home) Jung On/Off actuator Gira Web server But… new solutions and studies are still appearing in this domain ! Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 8/12 Domotic technology (II) Song G. et al., “A Wireless Power Outlet System for Smart Homes” in IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, Vol. 54, No. 4, Nov. 2008 Safiyya Rusli, Mehrdad Dianati, “Mobile access to smart home network”, Adjunct Proceedings of the 4th European Conference on Smart Sensing and Context (EuroSSC), pp. 29-34, 2009Mobile access to smart home network Leichtenstern K. et al., “Mobile Interaction in Smart Environments”, The 4 th International Conference on Pervasive Computing, The Burlington Hotel, Dublin, Ireland May 07-10, 2006 Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 9/12 Proposed Laboratory Infrastructure (I) 1451.0 Std. [defines a set of operating modes and interfaces for controlling sensors and actuators ] (I&M developed using HDL languages and following the IEEE 1451.0 Std.) BUT… the control of the physical space and the power infrastructure are usually forgotten and, if implemented, specific solutions are adopted ! Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 10/12 Proposed Laboratory Infrastructure (I) Adopting domotic devices enables: 1-controlling the power infrastructure (may be turned on/off) -reduce power consumption and saves energy costs - avoids equipment ageing effects - technical support may be reduced 2-controlling light and temperature conditions - promote the correct lab operation - some experiments may require a precise temperature/light control Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions

Ricardo Costa - 2010 rjc@isep.ipp.pt - http://www.dee.isep.ipp.pt/~rjc 11/12 Conclusions Technological evolution + people lifestyles >> smart/automated homes; There are many technological solutions in the market (e.g. KNX Std.); But research community is always proposing new solutions and providing several studies in this domain. Introduction Smart / automated homes Domotic technology Proposed laboratory infrastructure Conclusions So…. devices and the remote control usually adopted for smart homes + laboratory infrastructure proposed (FPGA-based boards for replacing traditional instrumentation server + I&Ms) = easy the remote control of the laboratory conditions (experiments), namely: i) control environment conditions and ii) the power consumption.
