1 Clear Targets 8.11  Describe the role of the Great Awakening on the growth of religious tolerance and free exercise of religion. 8.12  Compare and Contrast the role of men, women, children, and indentured servants in various regions of colonial America.

3 Colonial Men New England Colonies  Life revolved around church (rituals)  Worked small farms and trades (ship building, fur trapping, fishing) Middle Colonies  Worked family farms  Protected families from Natives South  Many indentured servants and slaves working plantations  Plantation owners held most power and money

4 Colonial Women New England Colonies  Life revolved around religion  Many had more rights  Homemakers (had to make everything) and raise children Middle Colonies  Homemakers and often worked on family farms  Unmarried/widowed had jobs outside home South  Indentured Servants/Slaves worked for family  Plantation owner wives rich but isolated since plantations were so large, generally uneducated

5 Colonial Children In all regions, children played simple games or worked on family farms New England Colonies  Education was key; goal was to read bible  Literacy (ability to read) very high Middle Colonies  Apprenticeships (learn a trade like carpentry) Southern Colonies  Children of servants and slaves often worked with parents  Children of plantation owners would be educated by tutors

6 Discussion How would you describe colonial life for all people? Did any person have a more important role? How would such a hard working people have time for things like religion?

7 Religion Maryland Toleration Act: Increase in religious freedom and more tolerance for other religions (as long as they are Christian) The Great Awakening: religious revival of the 1730’s and 1740’s  A “new birth” of faith and renewed commitment to God

8 Religion Preachers like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield inspired thousands Effects:  Growth of new churches (Methodists, Baptists)  Belief that all people are equal before God  Actions matter (good deeds -> Heaven)  United colonists against unjust authority (king)

10 Representation of Colonial Culture Draw a picture, comic strip, write a story, or a diary entry, or any other approved creative outlet using information from today’s notes. Must be detailed.
