M-AERI Observations The Marine & Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer precisely measures the temperature of the ocean’s thin surface layer or skin.

Hull-Mounted 150 kHz Phase Array ADCP

Hull Mounted ADCP

Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Northward component of velocity (cm/sec) across the Florida Straits over 28 outbound transects between May and December, 2001. Velocity vectors from 150kHz ADCP along the Explorer cruise track during cruise no. 0138, September 9-15, 2001.

Regression of ADCP Backscatter upon Biomass

Biomass Elevation at Frontal Regime

GREENHOUSE GAS STUDIES Measurement of Carbon Dioxide in Surface Water: The ocean sequesters on average about 30 % of the CO 2 produced by combustion of fossil fuel and other human activities. The uptake changes with region and season. The partial pressure of CO 2 in surface water (pCO 2 ) controls to a large extent the flux of CO 2 between ocean and atmosphere. The automated pCO 2 system on the EXPLORER OF THE SEAS provides coverage to determine the CO 2 fluxes in the Caribbean Sea. Trend of pCO 2 with time along the Eastern track (see above). The red colors on the figure at left indicate that the region is a source of CO 2 to the atmosphere blue that it is a sink. The Caribbean Sea releases CO 2 to the atmosphere during the summer and fall and takes up CO 2 in spring.

AVHRR images of aerosol optical depth for the tropical North Atlantic Caribbean region for June (a) and December (b) (Husar et al.,1997) Warmer colors indicate higher concentrations of atmospheric aerosols. Atmospheric Aerosols
