2. THE OPENER COMMA & COMPLEX SENTENCES!

3. COMPLEX SENTENCE: THE OPENER Start with a preposition OR an “AAAWWUBBIS” or sometimes just a name or exclamation. Always need a comma after your “opener”

4. ________________, Amazina sniffed the tantalizing odor of pan-fried crow’s feet. ______________, strap yourself securely onto your broom, clasp the handle in both of your claws, and utter the mystical phrase, “Barlulia liftupus.”

6. EXAMPLES FROM A LONG WAY GONE As we walked toward the building, a soldier who carried a G3 weapon came out and stood at the doorway. After we had put on the new attire, we formed a horizontal line with legs apart and hands straight down at our sides.

7. OPENER SENTENCE PRACTICE Go to our class padlet. Then Write an “opener” sentence with a preposition. Make sure you put the comma in the right. See my example below… During warm ups, Ms. Rolfe is really annoying about grammar.

8. A LONG WAY GONE REVIEW Write a 3-4 sentence gist for the chapter, including a description of the characters, setting, and plot. Discuss three Significant Moments with TEXT EVIDENCE: The MOOD that Beah is trying to create through his description of the setting. Moments that convey characterization (focus on personality/roles, NOT physical descriptions) Important interactions and relationships between characters Write one paragraph about specific examples of the Author’s Craft. Your paragraph should focus on ONE technique used by Beah to make the novel interesting or impactful. Possible techniques to examine include diction, imagery, figurative language, syntax, etc. Be sure to give specific examples from the text. The paragraph should be at least 4 sentences long. You will present your chapter to the class!
