3 The Progressives combat the problems generally white, middle- class professionals from both political parties believed major reform was necessary

5 Muckrakers -Exposed the problems to the public -Lincoln Steffens wrote The Shame of Cities about corrupt gov. -Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine took hundreds of photographs of lower class -Ida Tarbell wrote History of Standard Oil about ruthless tactics of John D. Rockefeller

6 -Perhaps most famous muckraking literature - exposed Chicago meat- packing industry -Sinclair claimed he had seen everything in the book

7 - Long hours - Seven days a week - No minimum wage - Work sites unsafe - Child labor was permitted - In 1900, only 3% of workers belonged in unions
