2 What is the Safer Places Scheme? The Wakefield District Safer Places Scheme is a voluntary scheme that aims to assist vulnerable people with dementia, learning disabilities and autism to feel safer when travelling independently.

3 Designed from a Social Care perspective Assist vulnerable people to : Gain increased confidence to travel independently Maintain/improve their independent living skills Live more fulfilling lives Adds towards improved health and wellbeing Supports towards reducing hate crime

5 How the scheme works Fully branded Premises that are open to the public such as shops, offices, stations and public buildings are asked to become Safer Places. Safer Places are recognised by the Safer Places logo. Vulnerable people who are members of the Safer Places Scheme carry a Safer Places Card with their name and the details of up to three people that can be contacted in the event that support is required.

10 In addition …. Safeguarding The scheme assists in the Increased reporting and recording of Hate Crime and Anti-Social Behavior. Reduction of crime and Anti-Social Behavior Network of Safer Places can potentially encourage victims to report abuse Herbert Protocol – potentially assist in finding people that are lost

11 Herbert Protocol Can work hand-in-glove to aid Herbert Protocol Safer Places scheme is a 24/7 Council managed scheme Registrants carry the card with contact details of up to 3 people and Council’s 24-hour contact number Database of registrants Set up to work in partnership with Police and Safer Places

12 Co-working with residential homes Residential homes are asked to proactively register residents that are likely to go out and about independently Encourage the residents to routinely carry the Safer Places wallet on their person when they go out

13 Other partners GP practices - proactively register those already diagnosed with LD and Dementia Memory Service – provides Safer Places information at point of diagnosis All Partners - register their premises as ‘Safer Places’

14 Dementia Friendly district The Safer Places Scheme will play a significant part in making Wakefield District “Dementia Friendly”

15 Your Support Your organisation can help the scheme in safeguarding the vulnerable by Participating in the scheme Provide feedback about the scheme
