A few more facts and figures... Nationally, alcohol consumption more than doubled between the mid-1950s - late 1990s Alcohol consumption in T&W (over 16s): Binge drinkers 8.7% - circa 24,300 Increasing risk drinkers 19.7% - circa 25,600 Higher risk drinkers 6.5% - circa 8,400 of which 4,000 are dependant T&W patients admitted to hospital with alcohol- related conditions 4,155 men and 2,172 women in 2012/13 Rates worse than England average for men

NHS Health Check Everyone attending a NHS Health Check should have their alcohol consumption risk assessed Where the full AUDIT score is 8+ individuals will be given brief alcohol advice A referral to alcohol services should be considered for those individuals scoring 20 or more on AUDIT Interestingly....during April –Dec 2014 of the 3,062 Health Checks completed in T&W: 9.6% reported being teetotal ~ 1% had an AUDIT score of 8-15 “increasing risk” or 20+ indicating “possible dependency” None were recorded in the “higher risk” category
