Color Symbolism The color red is a symbol throughout the novel the Red Badge of Courage. The crimson field represents nature’s indifference to war. The red wound is the courage that Steven wants to display for fighting in the war.

Definitions Impressionism- The practice of expressing or developing one’s subjective response t a work of art or to actual experience; represents the emotional aspects of a character’s emotional turmoil Naturalism- Factual or realistic representation Realism- An inclination toward literal truth and pragmatism. Romanticism- Romantic quality or spirit in thought, expression, or action.

The Open Boat In both of Steven Crane’s pieces of literature they share the fact in that they all have to go through hardships and experience things that most men don’t have to.

G-Burg The purpose of the Gettysburg Address was to unify the front line and help the men of the war deal with the fear of death and in the Red Badge of Courage Steven violates the address by fleeing the front line not wanting to be hurt.

This Painting shows a discombobulated body. It shows complete chaos and disorder. We had the same problem within our country during the Civil War.

L.O.F. In the novel Lord of the Flies they see a skeleton covered by brush and creatures that looks like a normal man’s face; this is much like how the dogs were eating the flesh of the soldiers on the field because that is the food chain and is a part of nature just like how earth was taking back that body it created.

Comparison A good comparison of war novels is Gone with the wind and The Red Badge of Courage because GWTW is a love based book dealing with courage as well as the courage that Steven has to muster up to fight in the war.

Posters during the civil war would say many things to appeal to people, like bribes. An example is this poster to the left trying to entice the slaves with the chance of freedom

In the map above you can see that at the bottom and top of the map those are the two sides fighting over the rights of humanity; and while they are busy fighting and destroying our own country men the border states in the middle (red) are equally affected even though they don’t want any part of the war.

In the emancipation proclamation Lincoln was trying to unify the people and help free them. In The Red Badge of Courage Steven is apart of the Union which has the same fighting purpose of freedom.

The Connection Lincoln, King, and Gandhi all shared one common thing… the strong believe in world peace. They fought for the rights of humanity for people and not only did they die for what they believed in.. They would have died willingly for it.

In his novel Stephen Crane uses the third person omniscient point of view. This point of view knows everything that happens to the protagonist, what he feels, etc. It is the “all seeing eye”. Crane used this point of view to give the reader a deep look into the average soldier’s mind.
