Internet Safety Dangers and Netiquette
3
Trust No One You Don’t Know! A shark is a predator. Predators swim around looking for victims. The ocean is beautiful and wonderful, but it’s full of sharks. The Internet is also wonderful and interesting. It can help us do research, stay in touch with friends and family, play games, listen to music, watch movie trailers and lots of other cool things.
4
But the internet is also swimming with predators!
5
How do you know it’s a predator? You don’t! So you need to always be careful. ► Predators may make you feel like you have a friend that understands you, especially when you’re feeling lonely and like no one understands you. ► They might say things that make you feel good about yourself, especially if you’ve been feeling bad about yourself. ► They might chat with you online for a long time— months and months—until you feel like you really know them like a real life friend. ► But….
6
Everyone you meet online that you don’t already know well in person is a STRANGER. Don’t forget that!
7
Secrets of Safe Surfing NEVER give personal info online! NEVER give your name! NEVER give your age! NEVER give your school! NEVER give your phone number! NEVER give your email address! NEVER give your address or the city you live in! NEVER tell where you will be hanging out later! NEVER give your parents’ names! NEVER give the name of a team you play on! NEVER give anything else I haven’t thought of!!!!
8
More NEVERs!!!!! ► Never never never never never ever agree to meet anyone you meet online in person!!!!
9
NEVER ► …open email from anyone you don’t know ► It could have a computer virus. ► A computer virus can destroy your computer and make it so it won’t work anymore! ► Ask your parents if you have anti-virus software on your computer. It will help to protect it.
10
NEVER …let someone be mean or nasty to you online. If someone is saying bad words or saying bad things, turn off the monitor and tell a grown-up. This is Cyber-bullying and it is NOT alright!
11
NEVER …..trade or share music files or video files with other people, even your friends and relatives. It’s STEALING and it’s ILLEGAL.
12
Other stuff to be careful of… ► Spam This is when people send out a whole bunch of emails to people they don’t know Sometimes they do this to sell stuff Sometimes they just do it to be mean and fill people’s computers up with junk mail ► Hackers and Identity Theft This is when people get into other people’s computers and get their bank and other information so they can pretend to be them and steal from them.
13
Netiquette ► You need to be polite when you’re online. ► Never type in CAPITAL letters because, online, that means you’re yelling ► When people say mean, nasty things to people online it’s called FLAMING. This is not alright, just like it’s not alright in real life. ► When you communicate online, it’s hard to show how you feel. This is why we use emoticons to show emotions.
14
Emoticons :-) happy face :-( sad face ;-) winking, for when you’re joking :-D laughing :-P sticking your tongue out :-O you are surprised There are lots more emoticons…. emoticons
