3 NORTHWEST ORDINANCE One of the greatest contributions of the Articles of Confederation Established the procedure for statehood Demonstrated US plans to expand westward by adding new states and not extending the existing ones New states would be = members of Union Banned slavery in NW Territory Ohio River became boundary b/w free and slave regions between the 13 states and Mississippi River Mandated establishment of public schools

5 Louisiana Purchase President: Thomas Jefferson Negotiator: James Monroe US offered to buy port city, New Orleans from France Napoleon needed $$$ Napoleon sold New Orleans and the entire Louisiana Territory to the US for $15 million Purchase doubled the size of the US

6 Lewis & Clark Expedition * Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore new territory all the way to Pacific *16 months * started in St. Louis * guide was Native American: Sacajawea * charted trails west, mapped rivers & mountain ranges, collected samples different animals/species/ plants, recorded facts/info about the different Native tribes

7 War of 1812 aka 2 nd American Revolution : CAUSES 1.BRITISH IMPRESSMENT: capture US merchant ships and force American sailors to join the British navy 2.British were trying to RESTRICT US TRADE WITH FRANCE: British and French at war 3.BRITISH WERE GIVING MILITARY SUPPORT/SUPPLIES TO NATIVES who were trying to keep Americans from settling west of Appalachians 4.US WANTED BRITISH OUT OF NORTH AMIERICA by conquering Canada

8 WAR OF 1812 RESULTS 2 nd American Revolution 1.Ends hostility between US and GB: never again will U.S and Great Britain wage war over diplomacy, trade, territory, or any other kind of dispute 2.America’s army and navy were firmly established as worthy opponents of any European military force 3. The U.S military achievements in the War of 1812 increase nationalist sentiments and begins the development of a US national identity

9 ERIE CANAL Started construction in 1817: mostly immigrants Opened in 1825 363 mile artificial waterway that connects Lake Erie to the Hudson River, which then pours into the Atlantic Ocean Connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean Made NYC a major port Lowered transportation $$ Increased settlement in the west and western NY Helped unite new regions of Atlantic states

10 Rise of New York City *Capital of U.S until 1790 *Early developments turned NYC into great economic center established on a grid of city blocks *Erie Canal created link between European merchants and NYC markets * By 1835-NYC was largest city in US **Artisans, workers, bankers, businessmen made city boom

13 National Infrastructure Families move west of Appalachians to claim land in new American territories— Long, difficult trip RESPONSE-private companies built the nation’s roads and waterways--( roads were often turnpikes, or toll roads, fees used to pay for maintenance of the new roads 1825 Steamboat invented– enabled people to buy a ticket from private companies that operated the boats and travel in any direction (barges only flowed in one direction)

14 NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Unite the nations economic interests: N: produce manufactured goods, S: cotton and agriculture, W: livestock, grains and cotton: MAKE AMERICA INDEPENDENT NEED TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM: Railroads: faster, can cross almost any terrain, operates in severe weather Roads Canals: built in the wilderness where there were no roads or rivers Steamboat: could travel against the current National Road began in 1811

15 Monroe Doctrine: FOREIGN POLICY  Monroe announced that the U.S would prevent European nations from interfering with independent American countries— U.S would stay neutral in wars between European nations and their American colonies, but, if battles took place in the Americas, the U.S would view such hostile actions as hostile actions against the U.S  1823-President James Monroe warned the nations of Europe not to interfere in the politics of North and South America
