3 What are Harmful Algal Blooms? Cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) are microscopic organisms that can sometimes multiply to form harmful algal blooms (HABs). 5/30/20143

4 HAB Reporting OhioEPA has a very comprehensive HAB Reporting process However, it is based on a PDF form 5/30/20144 Citizen Scientist fill out Bloom Report Form (PDF)OhioEPA enters information into a database OhioEPA sends report to DNR and they determine if a screening needs to be conducted A public notification is issued based on the bloom severity

6 The Challenge Part #1 Algal Bloom color detecting functionality – Automatically draw a boundary around an algal bloom from a photo – Suggest a color of the HAB based off of a predefined color palette – Ask a series of questions 5/30/20146

7 The Challenge Part #2 Develop the overall application that submits data to an email and/or National Geographic’s Field Scope Project which replaces OhioEPA’s pdf form Include a Social Login Feature Interface with weather.gov and Water Quality Portal APIs Ask users a series of questions 5/30/20147
