1 Journal 1-11-06Wednesday Think about your parent/guardian. What makes him or her different and similar to you? Explain.

2 Purpose What are you learning? How to compare and contrast. Why are you learning this? To understand how two or more things can seem alike, but have some differences.

3 Crafting the lesson Read the two articles. One is about Oprah Winfrey and the other is about Bill Gates. Compare and contrast the two celebrities.

4 Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954. Her full name is Oprah Gail Winfrey. For the first six years of her life Oprah was raised by her grandmother on a Mississippi farm. At the age of thirteen Oprah was sent to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. A few years later at the age of nineteen Oprah landed her first job as a reporter for a radio station. In 1986, Oprah in 2000 introduced a monthly magazine called O, the Oprah Magazine. Oprah also likes to share her wealth. She has created at private charity called The Oprah Winfrey Foundation. In addition, she has formed two other organizations Christmas Kindness South Africa and Oprah’s Angel Network. In 2003 Oprah was on the Forbes magazine list of America billionaires. Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955. Bill grew up in Seattle, Washington. His full name is William Henry Gates III. Bill’s father is a prominent lawyer and his mother was a school teacher. At the age of 13 he attended Lakeside School; a private school where he was introduced to computers. Bill Gates attended Harvard University. Gates has written many books that have placed him on the best-sellers list. Gates and a friend founded Microsoft, a computer software company. Gates and his wife like to give back to the community/world. Bill gives billions of money to help improve global health, improve learning opportunities, and community projects. In 2003 Bill was ranked #1 on the Forbes magazine list of American billionaires.
