10 Course Selection Book: Programs – PSP and Special The following special programs are available at CPA: French Immersion International Baccalaureate Grade 11 entry point English/Bilingual/FI certificate available Options and Opportunities Typical Grade 10 entry point

11 Students must complete at least 9 French Immersion (FI) credits in order to receive a FI certificate. Grade 10 FI courses are also designed to be suitable as diploma prep courses for the IB program Students in the FI program must complete: Francais-Immersion 10 – Grade 10 Francais-Immersion 11 – Grade 11 Francais-Immersion 12 – Grade 12 French Immersion

12 French Immersion Credits In addition to Francais 10, 11, 12, the following FI credits are usually available to students.  Sciences 10F  Histoire Ancienne 10F  Dramatique, Arts 10  Mathematiques 10 – 2 Crds  Biologie 11F Courses currently offered for grade 11 and 12 students Histoire Canadienne 11F Histoire Planetaire 12F

13 The IB Diploma Program is an international program that develops learners to be literate, articulate, and confident with an understanding of global issues and other cultures. The IB program develops students who are: inquirers and thinkers, open-minded and reflective willing to take on challenges communicators who interact readily and effectively with others committed, motivated and organized International Baccalaureate

14 IB Diploma graduates receive excellent recognition from universities in Canada, and around the World. If your child wishes to enter the IB Diploma Program they should have taken the preparatory courses offered in grade 10. Students are still able to enroll in IB if they have not taken the diploma prep courses. 15 Options and Opportunities O2 is a program designed to help students work toward a career or occupation in learning contexts which provide linkages to the workplace. O2 is appropriate for if your student: Wishes to explore or develop skills in a community setting Is interested in a career in the trades/tourism/entrepreneurship Prefers hands-on learning opportunities Entrance to the O2 program normally occurs in the students’ grade 10 year. 16 Academies of Learning (part of the on-line booklet) Academies of Learning are intended to help your student figure out the many courses available to them at the high school level. Each Academy includes: a short description typical career opportunities interests and abilities of students a list of suggested and related courses These Academies should allow them to gain an insight on typical career opportunities and possible paths to achieve them.

20 Post Secondary Study Due to the diverse entrance requirements of post-secondary institutions, students should develop an academic plan that is both realistic and attainable. Nova Scotia High School graduation requirements are not aligned with post-secondary requirements. This becomes a factor for course selection in a students grade 11 and 12 year.

21 Check for prerequisites need by: Checking university websites Attending post-secondary day, campus open-houses and individual institutional visits Talk to the guidance counselors Reverse Engineer - Work backwards from your goal to choose your courses Post Secondary Study Students should consider their post-secondary requirements (site and program) in order to pick the appropriate courses.

22 Grade 12 students usually apply to university at the end of their first semester. Some grade 11 marks are used in conjunction with the first semester grade 12 marks to determine admission averages and award scholarships. Typical requirements for several post-secondary programs (all courses are at the grade 12 level) Bachelor of Arts – English and four other academic courses Bachelor of Science – English, Pre-Calculus, two Sciences and one other academic course University

23 Bachelor of Engineering – English, Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, Physics and one other academic course Bachelor of Computer Science – English, Pre-Calculus and three other academic courses Bachelor of Nursing – English, Math, Chemistry, Biology and one other academic course Bachelor of Commerce – English, Mathematics (in some cases, Pre-Calculus) plus three academic courses University

24 The Nova Scotia Community College requires a grade 12 diploma and may require specific subject requirements depending on the program students are interested in. Students are able to apply to NSCC in their grade 11 year. Admission is on a first come – first served basis. Programs Offered: -Applied Arts & New Media-Transportation -Information Technology-Technology -Energy-Natural Resources -Tourism & Culinary-Geomatics -Health & Human Services-Manufacturing -Construction N. S. Community College

25 Due to the important nature of grade 12 courses (University consideration) students may select a maximum of 2 grade 12 courses for their grade 11 year. Course changes are very difficult to entertain once selections have been made and counsellors have talked to students (staffing is based on the students selection). Course changes will be accommodated until late spring, or if students are not successful in their studies. Students are choosing courses for the year and they do not have a choice of the semester in which the course falls. Grade 11 students are required to register for 7 courses. Grade 12 students are required to register for 6 courses. Choosing Courses

26 Nova Scotia Graduation Requirements 18 credits are required to graduate from High School  13 are compulsory credits  5 are elective credits – over and above the 13 Maximum 7 grade 10 coded credits Ex: History 10, Math 10 Minimum 5 grade 12 coded credits Ex: Chemistry 12, Law 12

30 Routes through High School Math If you want to obtain a High School diploma and then: Enter the workforce or an apprenticeship program Apply to Community or private College(most programs) Apply to a Bachelor of Arts program at most universities Needs: 2 math credits from different grade levels Math Essentials 10 and 11 or Math Foundations 10 and 11 or Math 10 and Math 11

32 Routes through High School Math If you want to obtain a High School diploma and then: Apply to University for a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Computing Science Bachelor of Commerce (some) Bachelor of Health Science (some) Needs: 4 math credits, 1 from each grade level plus Pre-Calculus 12 Math 10, Math 11, Pre-Calculus 11 (Advanced)*, and Math Pre-Calculus 12 Calculus 12 is an optional 5 th math course taken in grade 12.

34 Compulsory Credits ~ Science~ 2 required credits 1 credit from either:  Science 10  Chemistry, Biology or Physics 1 other science credit  Chemistry, Physics or Biology  Oceans 11, Human Biology 11, Food Science 12 or Geology 12 All grade 11 students should take a second science credit. Grade 12 students are not required to select a grade 12 science credit unless they need the course to meet graduation or specific post- secondary requirements.

35 Compulsory Credits ~Other~ 2 required credits from either:  Technology (listed in the course selection booklet)  Science – above the 2 required compulsory sci. credits  Math – above the 2 required compulsory math credits The ‘other’ credits can be completed at anytime during the students high school years.

36 Compulsory Credits ~Fine Arts~ 1 required credit from either:  Visual Art 10  Music 10  Drama 10 / Dramatique, Arts 10  Dance 11 – counts as either a fine arts or phys ed credit – but not both (not offered for 2013/14) Grade 11 and 12 students who have not yet completed the Fine Arts requirement should select from the above courses.

37 Compulsory Credits ~Physical Education~ 1 credit from either:  Physically Active Living 11  Physical Education 10, or 11(not offered for 2013/14)  Martial Arts 11  Dance 11(not offered for 2013/14)  Fitness Leadership 11  Yoga 11 Grade 11 and 12 students who have not yet completed the physical education requirement should select one of the above courses.

38 Compulsory Credits ~Canadian Studies~ 1 credit from either:  Canadian History 11 or Histoire Canadienne 11F  African Canadian Studies 11  Mi’kmaq Studies 10 Grade 11 and 12 students who have not yet completed the Canadian History requirement should select from the above courses.

39 Compulsory Credits ~Global Studies~ 1 required credit from either:  Global History 12 or Histoire Planetaire 12F  Global Geography 12 The Global Studies credit is completed in the students’ grade 12 year.

40 Things that should help (will be on–line)

41 Guidance Counsellors will be visiting classes next week to discuss the course selection process. Parents/Guardians should review the guide (on-line), discuss course selection with their son or daughter, and assist in the completion of the on-line form – power school. It is important to make decisions that will allow your child to experience success. Students will be called down to the computer lab (hopefully) to complete the course selection forms in March Deadlines - What Happens When The on-line form will be active in mid February and will remained open till end of March – Students are welcome to complete/change their selection during this time period

42 During the months of April and May, school counsellors will assist each student – through individual meetings - making sure selected courses allow the student to meet graduation and program requirements. They will input changes in power school Counsellors will individually meet all potential graduates in the fall of their senior year to review course selection. A parent information session will also be held at that time to discuss post-secondary information, scholarships and timing. What Happens Next…
