Slope Intercept Form
2
Y = mx + b m is the slope b is the y-intecept (0, b) Your equation must say “y = “ Example: Y = 3x + 8 m = 3 Y-intercept (0,8) Y = (x/4) – 10 m = ¼ Y intercept: (0, -10)
3
What about y = 7? Remember: Y = 0x + 7 M = 0 Y-intercept: (0,7)
4
Write in slope intercept form We must solve for “y” 2x + 3y = 9 -2x 3y = 9 – 2x 33 3 Y = 3 – 2xy = -2x + 3 3 3 M = -2/3 Y intercept: (0,3)
5
Identify the slope and the y intercept: 1). Y = 4x – 9 2). 4y = 6x + 8 3). 2x – y = 10 4). 6x + 5y = -9 Answers: 1). M = 4 y-intercept: (0,-9) 2). M = 3/2 y-intercept: (0,2) 3). M = 2 y-intercept: (0,-10) 4). M = -6/5 y-intercept: (0, -9/5)
7
Write the equation in slope intercept form Given m = 4, and the y- intercept is (0, -6), write the equation for the line: Y = mx + b y = 4x - 6 Example: Given the slope is (3/5) and the y intercept is (0,8), write the equation for the line: Example: Given the 2 pts write the equation for the line: (2,5) and (0,3)
9
Graphing using y = mx + b First, identify the slope of the equation Second, identify the y – intercept of the equation and graph the y-intercept Third, using rise over run (slope) graph the equation
10
Example: Y = - ½x + 1 Slope: Y intercept:
12
How can we determine if 2 lines are parallel or perpendicular? Example: 4X + 2y = 52x + y = 5 Identify the slope for each equation, then compare Y = (2/5)x – 3 5x + 2y = 1
