10 Mother Tongue Read Aloud sessions Primary student will read in the mother tongue language to a Lower Primary class, often an older student will read to a younger sibling. I read the same story in English, taking turns page by page with the mother tongue reader. The class will experience the story in two languages. 10

11 Rewards of Mother Tongue Learning Proficiency in an additional language Promotes the student’s cultural and personal identity Prevents cultural gaps within the family Recognises previous learning 11

12 Rewards of Mother Tongue Learning Continued Scaffolds and bridges to English, allows the student to reach a high proficiency in English Allows the student to re-integrate better into the home country and school system Makes her/him value her/his own cultural background 12

13 Booktalking to teenagers The Librarian acts as an ambassador, visiting lower secondary classrooms. Encourages reluctant readers to read Exposes students to classic YA literature Promotes their own section of the school library 13
