1 Demonstrative Adjectives
Avancemos 2 Unidad 2 Lección 1

2 Demonstrative Adjectives
Demonstratives show distance in relationship to the speaker. In other words, they show if something is close to, not so close, or far away from the speaker. There are both demonstrative adjectives and demonstrative pronouns. We will begin by learning demonstrative adjectives. Demonstrative adjectives are used to describe how close something or someone (a noun) is to you. Examples in English of demonstrative adjectives This car – (close to the speaker) That car – (not so close to the speaker) That car (over there) – (far away from the speaker) Demonstrative Adjectives

3 Demonstrative Adjectives
Demonstrative adjectives appear before the noun. (this, these, that, those) This dog/that dress/those gloves etc In Spanish, they agree in gender and number with the noun they describe. Demonstrative Adjectives

Boletos is masculine plural (los boletos). The word “these” indicates that they are close. Therefore, these tickets = Estos boletos. That suitcase (over there) - _____ maleta. Maleta is feminine singular (la maleta). The words “that” (over there) indicate that it is far away from the speaker. Therefore, that suitcase (over there) = Aquella maleta.

Some students confuse the “close” and “not so close” demonstratives because they look so similar. A good way to remember which order they go in is with the following little rhyme: “This and these have “T’s” (este/esta etc) That and those don’t (ese/esa etc) Far away begins with an “A” (aquel/aquellas etc) Demonstrative Adjectives
