My PCR Project Ms. Grasso

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Summary: In the beginning of the book, we are introduced to Katniss Everden. Even though she's only a teenager, she's a tough hunter who puts food on her family's table. Her father is dead and she lives with her mother and sister Prim in District 12. Every year, the Capitol of Panem hosts an event called “The Hunger Games”. A male and female are chosen from each of the 12 districts to fight to the death. The event is televised and promoted much like a reality TV show today. When Katniss’s sister is chosen to fight, Katniss volunteers to take her place and will demonstrate her survival skills as she battles in the arena.

The Genre This is a dystopian, romance, adventure book. The book takes place in the future after the end of the world as we know it. The book speaks about politics and the danger of the wrong person gaining power.

Characters Katniss Everdeen: The main character from District 12 who fights in The Hunger Games. A strong and independent young woman. Primrose Everdeen: Katniss’s sister Peeta Mellark: The male tribue from District 12. Loyal and Brave. Has somewhat of a romance with Katniss.

Characters, continued Gale Hawthorne: Katniss’s childhood friend and hunting buddy. Has somewhat of a romace with Katniss. Haymitch: Katniss and Peeta’s mentor. He is an alcoholic but an amusing character!

May the odds be ever in your favor! In Hunger Games, there are creatures called Mutations (Mutts). These are animals that have been genetically altered to create an animal that could be used as a weapon. Two examples of this are the Jabberjay (which later mated with the mockingbird to become the Mockingjay) and the Tracker Jackers (killer wasps). In groups of 3, create an “animal weapons.” You can choose animals from a variety of groups (birds, mammals, insects, etc.). Describe what the new animal looks like, why it is dangerous, where it lives, what it eats, and draw a picture! Each group will then present their “Mutt” to the class.

Who should read it? Readers who like dystopian books, romance novels, and adventure thrillers! The book is a pretty easy and entertaining read and most high school students should not have a problem getting through it!
