1 CACFP Child Care Wellness Grant ODE Child and Adult Care Program

2 BACKGROUND The Agriculture, Rural Development Food & Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-80): $8 million Competitive Grant Promote health and nutrition of children in child care settings.

3 14 States ½ funds awarded CACFP child care sponsoring organizations Grant period 2-3 years Fund nutrition & physical activities in child care and after school settings BACKGROUND

4 BACKGROUND Oregon received $500,000. $250,000 will go to CACFP Center Sponsors and FDCH Sponsors

6 5 KEY STRATEGIES 1. Increase the amount and variety of fruits and vegetable consumption for children in child care. 2. Increase access to and consumption of healthy beverage options for children in care. 3. Improve accommodations for breastfeeding if the center or home cares for children under age 1.

7 5 KEY STRATEGIES Cont. 4. Eliminating screen time (time spent using the television, videos, computers or video games) in child care settings. 5. Increase the amount of structured (adult-led) physical activity for children in care.

8 5 GOALS OF THE GRANT Network of Child Care Wellness Champions (includes mini-grants) Support Champions to become Peer Educators Increase participation in CACFP Assemble Child Care Wellness Advisory Committee to provide guidance for the grant Virtual Child Care Wellness Warehouse

10 MINI-GRANTS: ALLOWABLE USE OF FUNDS Hands-on activities – preparation/tasting of healthy foods Purchase of curriculum Small equipment or supplies Staff or provider training in nutrition and/or food safety Parent & provider education and promotion regarding physical activity

12 GRANT ACTIVITIES ODE - CNP Hired OPHI as the contractor Assembled and is working with Advisory Committee Child Care Wellness Virtual Warehouse Mini-grant proposals and funding Training and technical assistance to CACFP Sponsors Evaluation Submit required reports to USDA

15 TIMELINE  Dec 2010: The request for RFP for contractor submitted to ODE.  Jan – Feb 2011: Contractor Proposals reviewed & selection made  Feb-Mar 2011: Finalize contract between ODE & selected contractor (OPHI)

16 TIMELINE April-May 2011: Assemble/convene Advisory Committee May-Sept 2011: Develop Child Care Wellness Warehouse May-Aug 2011: Develop mini- grant application and selection criteria   

17 TIMELINE  Sept – Nov 2011: Conduct workshops for CACFP Sponsors, outreach, provide T/A on RFP; announce grant and distribute RFP.  Nov 30, 2011: Sponsor application due date.  Dec 2011-Jan 2012: Review proposals and award mini- grants.

18 TIMELINE  Feb 2012-July 2012: Sponsors conduct assessment of facilities or homes & assist facility or home in implementing key strategies  Aug 2012-July 2013: Center/home serve as leaders in community by serving as peer educators and/or mentors

19 TIMELINE  Dec 2012-Nov 2013: Child Care Wellness Champions share lessons learned, contribute to Warehouse; Data collection & evaluation
