Literary Present "Use the present tense when discussing a literary work, since the author of the work is communicating to the reader at the present time. (literary present) Literary Present Practice Pretend that this is student writing about “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” Write the correct form of the underlined words (some may already be correct). When the Green Knight arrived at King Arthur’s court, he came bearing his axe and a spring of holly. Arthur welcomed him but also thought that the knight has come to fight. The knight, however, was on another mission: he wanted to test the virtue of one of Arthur’s men.
