The English Reformation Henry VIII…a Tudor –He was stubborn, impatient and cruel man. –Wanted to keep family on the throne. –Problem: He needed a son but got Mary, whose raised catholic. Henry asked the Pope to annul his marriage to Catherine. The Pope refused. Why? Henry had the archbishop of Canterbury-Thomas Cranmer- (highest bishop in England) annul the marriage anyway. The English Reformation cont… Henry then declared he is the head of the Church in England in his Act of Supremacy. Doesn’t do much to reform church…looks very catholic, but called ANGLICAN. Henry declared the Catholic Church illegal and took the Churches land and gave it to his nobles. WHY? Edward died, Catholic Mary I…’Bloody Mary’ persecuted non Catholics; made church catholic married Philip II of Spain Mary died, and Elizabeth I becomes Virgin Queen Protestant, Created 39 Articles of religious compromise (Elizabethan settlement) and national unity.
