Lesson 5: Applying Effects CMM204 – Digital Media Effects

Chapter Objectives How to apply and edit effects Animating Effect points Using Adjustment layers Adding Blending modes Layer Styles

Topics to be covered Effects control Animating Effects Pasting Position & Masks to Effect Point Copying and pasting Effects Adjustment Layers and Effects Blending Modes Layer Styles

Effects 2 Ways to apply effects –Effect Menu –Effect and Presets Panel fx switch is the master effects switch, if an fx switch is on all effects that are enable will be processes Effect and presets panel can be opened by double clicking the effect or (Ctrl+Shift+T)

Search Able to filter out the desired effect with keyword With Options menu, able to view effects in categories, explorer folder or alphabetically

Effects Controls There are many effects controls available in after effects. Some of which are: –Sliders –Stacking Effects –Rotary Dials –Color Swatches –Popups –Effects Points

Sliders Gives you quick access to a range from a minimum to a maximum value Slider’s range can be change clicking on edit value Slider have been all but replaced by directly scrubbing parameter values

Stacking Effects You can apply an unlimited number of effects to each layer in a comp Effects are processed in a top-to-bottom order To reorder them drag them by their names up/down the list

Rotary Dials Usually used by paramets that adjust an angle such as rotation, drop shadow direction etc To adjust click anywhere inside the dial and it will jump to this position Also able to click and drag to the desired position

Color Swatches Color swatches allows you to select the desired color that you like Another method is use the eyedropper to “pick” the color of your choice

Popups Some effects parameters have discrete choices rather then continuous numeric ranges These are usually represented in popup menus

Effect points Defines the area the effect takes place over or between Are represented by crosshair icons Can be edited directly in the comp panel

Animating Effects Effects are animated the same way as any other property of a layer However to change the motion path of effects you have to go to the layer panel Under view, select your effect and you can see the motion guide from here you can edit it to your preference

Pasting Position & Masks to Effect Point Apply an effect to an object Locate the position keyframes of the object Click on the position word and press Ctrl+C Click on the effect property and press Ctrl+V

Copying and pasting Effects When pasting effects to a layer that does not have this effect, only keyframable parametes are pasted Copying from the effects control panel copies a current snapshot of all its parameters If you paste an effect to a layer that has the same effect applied, it just pastes its values

Copying and pasting Effects You can duplicate selected effects using (Ctrl+D) When same effect is applied, pasting values defaults to pasting to the topmost effect

Render Settings Three different Options –Current Settings Any effect that are on will render and those that are turned off won’t be processed –All On Will turn on all effects whether they’re currently enabled or not –All Off Turns all effects off

Adjustment Layers and Effects As with layers, when you insert a adjustment layer all layers below it will have the effect applied to it as well Effects are applied only in proportion to how opaque the adjustment layer is You can apply multiple effects to a single adjustment layer and multiple adjustment layers in a single comp

Blending Modes Effects applied to an adjustment layer can also be reapplied to the original image using a blending mode and Opacity to further refine the mix This is particularly useful for more subtle effects

Layer Styles Layer styles are a set of editable effects, textures and gradients that create interesting treatments More sophisticated then their normal After Effects counterparts When you import a.psd file, you have the option to keep the layer styles live and editable

Thank You!
