8 European Innovation Profile INDUSTRY - More innovative countries have higher innovation rates in SMALL FIRMS comparing with the European average. SERVICES – Innovation rises with the size of the company. 4.2

9 5 - Conclusions 5.1 Extent of technological Innovation in Portugal Portugal has a lower innovation rate compared with the European average, which is supported on: Portugal doesn´t behave as other european countries, where small companies has the higher innovation rate as well as being the new ones.

10 Resources allocated to Innovation The share spent on R&D and the verified Innovation activities can not be directed related in Portugal, due to: Considering that 70% of the expenditures are applied in machinery and equipement. Human resources can not be directly related in both sectors with innovative activities. group 1 and group 2, can not be related, however they have the higher I&D expenditure.

11 Innovation Objectives Mainly, product quality, market increasing and costs reduction, which is shown by the massive investment on machinery and equipement. Focused on new products/services, that need an higher inovation rate. Industry search for productivity increasing and Services for market expand/wide range of services. Europe is more products/services replacement focused.

12 Cooperation and Innovation Sources Information Sources: - for big companies company internal sources and other companies within the same group. - company/university cooperation is found at a low level, once that companies doesn´t consider relevant the universities as information source. - Innovation and cooperation is linked to industry, mainly at the client and supplier level.
