Learning Target: Analyze quotes and identify connections between the concepts of challenges and heroism.

1 When you hear the word challenges, what comes to mind?
Is the word positive or negative? How can challenges be helpful to an individual? How can they be harmful?

2 Group Roles: I will assign groups today.
Each member of your group will have a specific job. Leader: will read the quote aloud and facilitate the discussion. Recorder: take accurate notes as to what is said. Illustrator: will capture ideas for a visual display. Presenter: will organize and assign speaking parts.

4 Analyzing a Quote Read your assigned quote and diffuse the text by identifying and defining unfamiliar words. In the graphic organizer, paraphrase the quote and brainstorm examples from life or literature that support the speaker’s idea about challenges.

5 Analyzing a Quote Categorize the quote based on how the speaker defines a challenge: as an obstacle, a difficult task, or an opportunity. Circle or highlight the appropriate category in the third column.

6 Creating a Poster of Your Quote
Create a poster that represents the meaning of your quote. You will use this visual display to clarify and add interest during your presentation. - In 30 seconds, create a list of what elements should be required on the poster. - Marry Lists

8 Presenting With your partner/group, share your poster and quote.
What kinds of things do you think are important when presenting?

9 Presenter Roles A: Read the quote and explain the meaning.
B: Provide specific examples from life. C: Explain the group categorization of the quote. D: Explain how the quote connects to the concept of heroism.

10 Homework Research a quote that represents who you are, your outlook on life, your philosophy, so to speak. (Due tomorrow.) In a paragraph, explain what the quote means and explain why you chose it. (Due tomorrow.) Then, create a poster that displays the quote. We will decorate the room with these. (Due Thursday.)
