When they found Edgar, he was unconscious and barely breathing.
He was taken to a hospital where he slipped in and out of consciousness, and seemed to be going mad.

Poe’s narrators in his works admit to using opium but Poe himself never used opium.
Edgar’s middle name was misspelled in articles, newspapers, and movies. The misspelling was blamed on him and he was accused of not knowing how to spell his own name.
